The Israely laboratory in the department of Physiology & Biophysics in the UW School of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 3. POSITION PURPOSE The specific goals are to elucidate how activity leads to functional and structural alterations at neuronal connections, and how these processes underly learning and memory. The project combines several techniques for the optical probing of local hippocampal (and other) circuits with the ultimate goal of determining what are the fundamental units of learning.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Independently carry out experiments to address how activity leads to functional and structural alterations in neuronal circuits by applying advanced optical methods (such as 2-photon microscopy, glutamate uncaging, and calcium imaging) to manipulate and follow activity at single or groups of dendritic spines in ex-vivo preparations. (35%)

  • Development of new research techniques for the lab’s projects. (5%),

  • Preparation of materials and reagents, data analysis, and reporting (20%)

  • Generation of scientific figures and graphs and contributions to scientific manuscripts and grant writing. (20%)

  • General laboratory management duties such as ordering, mouse colony management, and supervision of trainees. (20%) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience,OR Equivalent combination of education/experience. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Optical detection and analysis of calcium signals in living tissues, Matlab proficiency and coding abilities.

  • Multiphoton imaging and optical stimulation techniques, mouse husbandry skills, experience with supervision of trainees. Other This position is eligible for H-1B sponsorship.
