The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department with over 300 full-time faculty members, over 400 courtesy/affiliate faculty members, 132 trainees and over 300 staff with an annual budget of over $110m. Department faculty provide clinical services in the University of Washington School of Medicine, University of Washington Medical Center-Montlake and Northwest and Harborview Medical Center. Faculty members also serve at Seattle Children's Hospital, the Veteran’s Administration Puget Sound Healthcare System, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center; which comprise 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites; in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest and is the largest program in the United States. We offer 26 graduate medical education programs, including the Psychiatry Residency and Clinical Psychology Intern/Resident programs, 24 subspecialty clinical fellowships (ACGME & Non-ACGME), and required and elective medical student clerkships for 276 students. In addition, our education program runs 6 workforce training programs for mental health practitioners across Washington State and the Pacific Northwest Region.

The Department’s robust research portfolio reached $55 million in grant and contract awards in fiscal year 2023 for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is recruiting for two full time Research Scientist/Engineer 3s (E S UAW RSE). These positions will have a lead role in conducting an entirely remote/virtual randomized control trial, related research projects, and associated products for both, as specified within study awards/grants.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Study project management including, guiding study timeline from development of data collection tasks based on a study proposal through completion of data collection and data cleaning. This includes convening team meetings, funder reporting, and fulfilling necessary functions to make a study run on the day to day. This also includes identifying a technical approach for solving problems and meeting the funders’ needs. (15%)

  • Ensure study regulatory requirements are met with the Institutional Review Boards, Data Safety Monitoring Boards (and others). This includes preparing and tracking Human Subjects Division protocol revisions. (10%)

  • Develop and maintain study protocols and procedures using own existing scientific knowledge and with feedback from PI and the multi-disciplinary project team. Expected to participate in determining feasibility of goals and objectives throughout this development and maintenance process. (15%)

  • Program and maintain the study data collection redcap and any other related data collection tools and integrations needed. (5%)

  • Conduct data collection in collaboration with recruitment sources including conducting qualitative interviews, conducting the Caring Contacts intervention with those randomized to receive it, managing participant risk, and assuring data is complete, accurate, and timely. Apply an understanding of social science and research methods to identify, seek consultation, and take action to prevent or mitigate protocol deviations and procedures that could threaten research rigor or limit the conclusions that can be drawn from the study. Checks study data for accuracy and adherence to protocol in preparation for analysis. (30%)

  • Harmonize and analyze study data with study team, including extracting and coding data. Develop presentations, contribute to manuscripts, and contribute future grant proposals using said data and scientific knowledge base. This includes being author/co-author on papers, proposals, presentations, and reports. (15%)

  • Assist with operational functions as needed for center-wide sharing/usage, might include standard operating procedures or administrative functions as well as research resource development. In this leadership role, responsibilities may involve providing training and oversight to research assessors or other support staff to complete some of these tasks. (10%)Lead Responsibilities: The position is a lead role in conducting an entirely remote/virtual randomized control trial, related research projects, and associated products for both, as specified within study awards/grants. May involve providing training and oversight of research assessors or other research support staff. Applies an understanding of social science and research methods to identify, seek consultation, and take action to prevent or mitigate protocol deviations and procedures that could threaten research rigor or limit the conclusions that can be drawn from the study. Ensures study and other study products are running on time and in compliance. Brings concerns to the project team and PI in a timely fashion for guidance on next steps. Provides general mentoring to staff in lower RS-positions and shares expertise with the center. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work or related field and four years of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 3 years of work-related experience.

  • Experience implementing randomized clinical trials virtually (i.e., entirely online/zoom/phone) with stressed and distressed and potentially suicidal participants including a deep understanding and experience of Good Clinical Practice standards for clinical trials and regulatory and ethical issues of working with distressed and suicidal participants.

  • Experience assessing and managing suicide risk of study participants virtually.

  • Experience with managing study staff effort and resources, reporting to funders, and regulatory oversight including IRBs and DSMBs.

  • High level of sensitivity and communications skills required - both to interact effectively with distressed and potentially suicidal study participants and to conduct team science within a virtual multi-disciplinary research team.

  • Experience with data collection using REDCap software and facility learning and working with a variety of online web-applications.

  • Ability to conduct qualitative interviews and code qualitative data.

  • Experience with implementing suicide interventions, particularly Caring Contacts.

  • Experience with SharePoint Online and Basecamp organizational software.

  • Experience with UW administrative and regulatory procedures and software.
