The Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Research Scientist/Engineer 3.

The Research Scientist/Engineer 3 manages a number of clinical research projects, applying ddPCR/pCR assays to identify viral strains and diversity in study samples, HSV and SARS-CoV-2 Clinical trials and other projects.

Developmental Duties (35%):

• Develop and validate new assays for diagnostic needs and research protocols • Adopt new, unique procedures and technologies, which are not standardized, to fulfill the needs of individual studies.

Analytical/Operational Duties (45%):

• Perform different technologies on different types of study samples according to the study needs, analyze the experimental results and determine the follow-up experiments. • Perform and improve procedures of the technologies currently used in the lab, including real-time PCR, digital droplet PCR, real-time RT-PCR, digital droplet RT-PCR, PCR-cloning, PCR-sequencing, in situ hybridization, gene expression, cell culture and general immunology testing. • Maintain the complete and accurate records and document all the changes • Write up and update the standard operating procedures for laboratory personal to follow • Write up study plans for different studies for laboratory personal to follow • Perform document laboratory standard operating procedures. • Performs assays accurately, precisely, track the progress of studies and make sure all the deadlines are met. • Conduct data analysis and interpretation for grant submission and publication. • Accommodate schedule changes to cooperatively accomplish required daily work. • Ability to continue co-workers’ experiments and take over the responsibility. • Participate in all laboratory maintenance and inventory duties. • Conduct literature search and review to determine research methods and project planning. • Initiates and manages moderate size projects and communicate with outside PIs and supervisor regarding study project progress and make recommendations for improvements. • Provide cross-check of co-workers’ results and data entry to ensure the integrity of the data set. • Follow the QA/QC policies and report all operation deviations. • Perform computer security updates as required on the networked lab computers.

Leadership/Supervisory Duties (20%):

• Train newly hired employees and students. • Delegates work when appropriate; consults with supervisor regarding department workload management when necessary. • Act as a role model/mentor to new employees and students. • May direct the operation of one or more facets of the research laboratory; • May evaluate and select new equipment; • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular Biology or related field AND Four (4) years of experience OR the equilavent combination of education AND experience.

Specific knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job satisfactorily include:/b>• Experience in primer/probe design for PCR, collaborative project design, and understanding of basicviral biology.• Strong written and communication skills.• Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot. Desirable Qualifications: • Highly organized and have a knowledge of laboratory working environments.• Previous experience in PCR and droplet digital PCR is highly desirable.• Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) skills.
