CICOES (Climate, Oceans and Environmental Sciences) has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3- Float Engineer to join their team.

This position supports the Argo project, which deploys core, deep, and biogeochemical floats in the global oceans.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 25% Float array logistics • Researches and arranges for float deployment opportunities on research ships, volunteer observing ships, and educational vessels, including evaluating which locations in the float array require additional instrumentation to fulfill project goals, arranging for deployment from vessels, providing possibilities for deployment locations, and working with the vessel to arrange suitable storage (can include arranging for containers or designing custom storage racks and working with contractors and ship personnel to install such racks). • Coordinates shipping of floats to deployment platforms including interaction with shipping agents, ship crews, and NOAA administration. • Sometimes travels to deployment platforms to perform final float tests and load floats onto ships. Trains ship personnel in float deployment techniques. • Makes presentations about Argo and general oceanography to students and ship personnel. • Time on travel and aboard ships may reach or exceed six weeks per year.

20% Float Lab Management • Maintains an organized laboratory facility, including procurement and maintenance of equipment and supplies, design and arrangement for construction of custom equipment, general upkeep, and non-budgetary oversight. • Coordinates with float and sensor vendors concerning delivery and repair of instruments to ensure delivery schedules are set and met in order to fulfill scientific needs of the program. • Assists with managing the laboratory environment including working effectively with team members who possess different skill sets, communicating professionally and effectively with team members, collaborators, and commercial partners within and outside of the lab, and creating an efficient lab facility with redundancy in technical expertise. • A successful candidate will prioritize the mission of the team, effectively prioritize and delegate tasks (as appropriate), and creatively identify opportunities to leverage team member skills and interests to achieve greater efficiency, job satisfaction, and performance toward the group's mission.

20% Float instrumentation • Tests floats and checks function and accuracy of scientific sensors (e.g., physical and biogeochemical sensors) to ensure products function and meet required specifications upon receipt from manufacturers. • As necessary, diagnoses and repairs instruments (or arranges with manufacturers for such repair). • Works with float and sensor manufacturers and scientific colleagues (i) to diagnose existing problems with existing instrumentation and devise and implement potential solutions and (ii) to devise improvements to existing technologies and possible variations to existing float instrumentation packages. • Develops testing protocols. Instructs and leads lab assistants (when available) in testing, repair, and any refitting of floats.

25% Float data management • Maintains records and works with others to maintain a database of all float testing. Works with others to develop and maintain a web-based system for float data monitoring. • Analyzes float and CTD performance based on these databases. • Provides information required to the U.S. and international Argo program and monitors that it is properly incorporated into their systems, or trains and supervises others to do so.

5% Scientific analysis • Assists with research on climate related topics incorporating data from the global profiling float array.

5% Performs other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Oceanography or related Physical Sciences or Engineering Disciplines and four years of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• General knowledge of oceanography • Experience working with oceanographic instrumentation • Familiarity with the Argo program • Knowledge of the internal setup of Argo floats and their sensors • Ability for independent problem solving • Must be able to lift 50 pounds • Must be able to travel within the US and internationally • Must have a valid driver license • Must obtain and maintain clearance to work at NOAA/PMEL

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge of SQL • Programming experience (Python, MATLAB, R, or similar) • Prior experience with testing of Argo floats and their sensors • Prior experience working with Argo float data • Solutions-oriented attitude • Experience in leadership/team management and/or the desire to gain such skills through on-the-job training opportunities
