The Heart Regeneration Program, a translational program within UW Medicine, is developing human pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes as a cell therapeutic. The program has an immediate opening for a Research Scientist Engineer 2. Under the general guidance of Senior Scientists, this position will be required to work independently to reach established milestones and goals. This position will also be expected to work collaboratively with fellow research personnel, and redirect efforts to achieve task/project objectives or enhance the quality of the project when necessary. RESPONSIBILITIES: The typical job functions for this position will include: • Cell culture responsibilities: o Aseptic and sterile work techniques o Expansion, maintenance, and banking of undifferentiated human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) o Performing quality control assays for undifferentiated cell banks (karyotyping, mycoplasma testing, etc.) o Clonal isolation, expansion and banking of edited cell lines o Differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells towards various cardiovascular lineages (i.e. cardiomyocytes, epicardial cells, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells) o Large scale banking of cardiomyocytes derived from hPSCs o Transfection of cultured cells • Gene editing; • Perform molecular analyses such as RT-PCR, western blotting, immunocytochemistry, and flow cytometry; • Assist with laboratory operations including ordering, regulatory compliance, and other key support as needed; • Prepare and maintain accurate protocols; • General lab maintenance; • Attend meetings as required; • Other duties as assigned MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: • Bachelor’s degree in a life science related field • At least 2 years of experience in cell culture and molecular skills Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: • Excellent organizational and communication skills • Excellent writing skills • Ability to teach • Command of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint programs • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team DESIRED: • Hands-on experience with human ESC or iPSC culture and differentiation; • Experience with suspension bioreactors for cell culture • M.S. in cell and developmental biology, physiology, biochemistry, or biomedical engineering.
