The Liu Laboratory focuses on understanding the mechanisms underlying nerve regeneration and muscle reinnervation, as well as translating these findings into novel therapeutic applications for patients with peripheral nerve injuries. We combine various techniques, including stem cell cultures and microsurgical models of peripheral nerve injuries in animals.

POSITION PURPOSE The Research Scientist/Engineer 2 in this position will perform research/experimental work, lead general lab maintenance, and assist with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Review Board (IRB), and Biosafety Use Authorization (BUA) protocols. They will play a pivotal role in training a diverse group of researchers, including surgical residents, medical students, graduate students, and undergraduate students. Due to the nature of the job duties, this is a fully in-person position (i.e., not remote or hybrid).

This is a 1.0 FTE position. Dr. Katie Liu is the PI in this lab and will oversee and manage the work of this position. The Administrator for Plastic Surgery will have a highly matrixed reporting relationship and will manage the administrative aspects of this position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducting research/Experiments = 40%o Feed/maintain cell lineso Perform experiments using histology/immunohistology chemistry techniqueso Assist with animal surgery & behavioral experimentso Assist with data analysis and manuscript/grant writing

  • Management of the Liu Lab = 30%o Manage general animal care, primarily rodent models (husbandry, genotyping, record maintenance, etc.)o Order and manage lab supplieso Maintain lab equipment and arrange for servicing as needed, including cell culture CO2 tank exchange, incubator cleaning, and cryo tank fillingo Autoclave and disposal of biohazardous waste

  • Management of protocols and compliance = 20%o Write, review, and update protocols for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Review Board (IRB), and Biosafety Use Authorization (BUA)o Arrange inspections and ensure that the lab stays in compliance

  • Oversight of Lab staff and trainees = 10%o Consult with PI regarding staffing for the labo Manage the hiring of staff and traineeso Oversee onboarding of new lab members including completion of mandatory lab trainingo Train new lab members in a variety of lab techniques Our Mission and How This Position Contributes: Department Mission:The Department of Surgery is a large department within the School of Medicine, with surgeons practicing at all our locations and in eight surgical subspecialties.
