The Microbiology department, Smith lab is looking to hire a Research Scientist/Engineer 1 (NE S UAW RSE) role to assist with virology and cell biology research. Particular areas of focus include viral pathogenesis and anti-viral immunity.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Laboratory Bench Research (70%)

  • Research, design, and perform experiments independently.

  • Assist others in the laboratory as requested by the principle investigator.

  • Execute large and complex experiments.

  • Purchase and price research supplies and equipment. Maintain laboratory organization and prepare general laboratory reagents.

  • Become skilled at conducting assorted experiments including, but not limited to, tissue culture, virus production and purification, molecular biology, microscopy, protein purification, and infectivity assays (both in cell culture and animal models).Analyze Scientific Data (10%)

  • Keep an organized research notebook, approach findings in a critical way and move projects towards publication.

  • Become widely knowledgeable, willing and able to communicate the background, motivation, and results of work to audiences of scientists.Assist in general maintenance of the laboratory and lab systems (20%)

  • Prepare solutions, buffers, and reagents, clean glassware as needed.

  • Order/maintain supplies for day-to-day operation of the lab.

  • Assist in maintenance/repair of laboratory equipment.

  • Act as a professional laboratory citizen.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required to complete work.

  • Perform other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and one year of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to organize and work well independently.

  • Practiced in laboratory citizenship.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required to complete work. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strongly prefer experience with mammalian cell culture models and background in virology or immunology.

  • Prefer independent thinking skills, working knowledge of computer programs used in research reports and analyses such as Excel, PowerPoint, Filemaker, GraphPad Prism, Vector NTI, FlowJo, and ImageJ.

  • Experience with Mac and PC platforms.

  • Experience with research animals.
