The National Primate Center has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 1 to join their team. POSITION PURPOSE

The primary purpose of the Research Scientist/Engineer 1 (NE S UAW RSE) position is to fulfill the mission of WaNPRC which is to empower the delivery of leading-edge scientific discoveries and promoting the highest standards of care, health, well-being and conservation for primates around the world. This primary purpose of this Research Scientist/Engineer 1 (NE S UAW RSE) position is to support research and core programs within the WaNPRC. The employee in this position will provide care to the research animals and ensure that procedures and daily activities are performed in accordance with associated protocol and regulatory requirements. This position will provide support to the outstanding biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and health of non-human primates. Not only will this person provide support via clinical care of experimentally manipulated animals, they will also provide technical support for actual experimental procedures. Some examples of research projects include but are not limited to the following: development of effective vaccines against HIV/AIDS via the oral mucosa, investigation of the effects of antibiotics on microbial communities and mucosal immunology of the GI tract and research of hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) targeting HIV resistant cells. In addition, this position is responsible for applying standardized veterinary concepts and procedures for the effective care of animals housed within the center. Additional duties and responsibilities assigned to the incumbent are: Contributing data for NPC technical research reports and publications; contributing recommendations regarding the feasibility of whole research projects or phases within a research project; and contributing to the development of new research methods and approaches.

This position performs continuous surveillance for all the research animals for clinical signs of diseases, data management, and high-level oversight of care required for animals on multiple projects. This person also coordinates, plans, executes, and documents post-surgical care: analgesics, monitoring, technical support during sample collections, blood draws, swab collections, preparation and administration of clinical medications, and maintains cleanliness and supply stocks in treatment rooms.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• 50% Generate, schedule, and Execute course of treatments for colony and research animals. • 10% Collaborate with PIs and Veterinarians on all aspects of animal care for new and ongoing research protocols. • 10% Surgery support (anesthesia, assist with major surgeries, perform minor surgeries). • 15% Managing treatment room, supplies, and drugs inventory and keep detailed records. • 5% Provide training to staff and ensure adherence to SOPs, participate in all training activities necessary for performance of the job. • 10% Collect samples for clinical and research purposes, document specimens taken into a database.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and one year of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Excellent organizational skills and flexibility to work in an environment with constantly shifting and occasionally conflicting priorities. • Ability to work with minimal supervision as well as collegially within diverse groups, following established guidelines. • Ability to take direction and communicate effectively with others. • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate judgement in sensitive situations. • Ability to generate and maintain accurate, detailed records using appropriate medical language. • Independent computer skills, including basic skills to use email and navigate on the internet. • Be able to assist veterinarians in all situations. • Proficiency in drug calculations, formulations, and dilutions. • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. • Adaptable, learns well in various environments.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience administering and monitoring anesthesia in animals and performing other veterinary technical procedures. • Veterinary Licensure or ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment. • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of non-human primates. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

CONDITITONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and carry 30 pounds • Physical ability required to do the work • Must be available to work some weekends and holidays and provide facility coverage for employees who are absent • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at the UW’s Employee Health Clinic. The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, serum banking, and immunizations, such as tetanus and rabies, physical exam and/or review of work health history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative respiratory protective equipment. These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment. Specific precautions may include wearing respirators and/or protective clothing. • Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies and procedures • This is an essential position. The employee is expected to report to work under conditions that other employees are not required to report to work, such as inclement weather and UW campus suspended operations. • Punctuality and regular attendance are critical components of this position. • Adhere to the WaNPRC Environmental Enhancement Plan requirements for NHPs. • Participate in the Behavioral Management and Positive Reinforcement Primate Training Programs. • Develop a working knowledge of classical and operant conditioning principles and how they apply to handling primates in a research environment, with positive reinforcement as the expectation. • Develop a working knowledge of non-human primate behavior.
