The Division of Cardiology is a large, complex section in >the Department of Medicine with over 100 faculty, 31 fellows and over 100 professional, classified and hourly employees spread across 6 campuses: UW-Montlake, Harborview Medical Center, UW-Northwest, Edmonds Cardiology Clinic, VA Puget Sound Hospital and UW South Lake Union.

The Division of Cardiology has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time , 100% Research Scientist Engineer 1, Project position for 12 months. The purpose of this research project that this position supports is to understand the molecular response of monocytes/macrophages to unloading in the failing heart.

Under the general direction of the PI, the Research Scientist will be primarily responsible for planning, carrying out, analyzing, and interpreting experiments that investigate the effects of alterations in the TGF-beta signaling pathway in mouse smooth muscle cells.

60% The Research Scientist will carry out experiments on the tissues and biomolecules including but not limited to immunostaining, computer-assisted planimetry, western blotting, and detection and measurement of specific DNA and RNA sequences.

10% These responsibilities will include managing of mouse colonies, harvesting mouse tissues, processing of harvested tissues including but not limited to fixation and embedding as well as protein and nucleic acid extraction.

10% The Research Scientist will also be responsible for making publication-quality figures and data tables, illustrating key results.

10% The Research Scientist will assist other research personnel in the laboratory with their experiments, including but not limited to the tasks listed above. The Research Scientist will assist with ordering lab supplies, maintaining equipment, and laboratory maintenance.

5% Experimental plans, methods and results are recorded in laboratory notebooks.

5% Plans and results of experiments are presented at group laboratory meetings and with the PI.

Ability to communicate clearly with other scientists within and outside the research group. Ability to accept constructive criticism from manager and others in the research group.

Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in Bioscience-related field and One Year of experience. Equivalent experience may be substituted for degree requirement. Specific Knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job satisfactorily include:
