The UW Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Research Scientist/Engineer 1.

The Research Scientist/Engineer 1 under general supervision will perform technical procedures and research in Dr. Alex Greninger’s laboratory. The position will support research looking at viral replication, viral-host protein-protein interactions, drug efficacy, viral evolution, and viral genome sequencing fields.

Scientific Research Activities (80%)

• Under general supervision, perform experiments according to documented protocols; • Under general supervision, perform scientific investigative procedures such as clinical validation of the techniques outlined above through interpretation of the results – notify supervisor or senior lab members if results are not agreeable with experimental goals; • Assist in troubleshooting problems that arise in research protocols and report problems to the Research Senior Scientist; • Assist supervisor and/or senior lab members in developing techniques including multiplex PCR, next-generation sequencing library preparation, and novel digital PCR tests; • Participate in writing reports about new assay development and continuing data collection and interpretation; participate in presentations to peers and supervisor both at formal lab meetings and informal meetings with colleagues; • Operate and maintain necessary instruments utilized in scientific studies of laboratory experiments, including PCR thermocyclers, qPCR instruments, RNA/DNA fragment bioanalyzer, gel electrophoresis apparati, droplet generator, droplet reader and their associated computers; • Maintain detailed lab records; • Conduct literature reviews and background searches to assist in determining research methods and project planning.

Other Duties (20%)

• Update specimen inventory; • Inventory reagents and supplies; • General lab cleaning and maintenance; • Operate ancillary equipment such as computers, printers, etc.; • Perform related duties as required; • Attend and participate in lab meetings.

Educational and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in a Biology, Microbiology, or related field AND One (1) Year of relevant experience, OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.

Specific knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job satisfactorily include:

PCR, primers and probe design, PCR product detection, Next generation sequencing, DNA sequencing analysis, DNA sequence analysis programs

Knowledge, skills and abilities that are desirable, providing for an enhanced level of job performance, include:

Molecular biology background, PCR sequencing, computer programing ability to analyze sequencing data.
