The Department of Biochemistry has an outstanding opportunity for a full time Research Scientist Engineer 1.

The main purpose of this position is to support laboratory research directed towards identifying regulators of core signaling pathways and understanding their role in embryonic development and adult tissue homeostasis.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Major laboratory responsibilities include (40%): -Mouse colony maintenance (specifically genotyping tails and maintaining a log of mice in the lab). -Mammalian cell culture. -Protein biochemistry.

Experimental research (40%): -Perform standard molecular biology techniques, including cloning, PCR, and DNA gel electrophoresis. -Collect and prepare embryonic mouse tissue and cells for in situ hybridization and immunofluorescence. -Examine changes in gene expression using quantitative PCR (qPCR). -Collect cell lysates and assess protein abundance using western blot techniques. -Maintain an organized, updated, and accurate electronic laboratory notebook. -Provide the Principle Investigator status reports on project progress. -Work in a collaborative research setting. -The ability to analyze sequencing datasets would be highly desired.

Laboratory maintenance and administration (20%): -Helps to maintain an organized laboratory. -Helps train laboratory members on safe laboratory practices, including BSL2 biosafety protocols. -Provides technical and logistical support to laboratory staff, including undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs. -Works with undergraduates to wash, sterilize, and store laboratory items. -Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree in Biological Science or related field + one year of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education/experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS - Basic molecular biology skills (ability to setup a PCR and run a DNA gel electrophoresis). -Willingness to learn and teach others. -Strong interpersonal and communication skills. -Ability to work independently, multitask, and collaborate well with a diverse group of people. -Basic computer skills, including word processing.

Desired - Familiarity with gene cloning would be an asset, but not necessary. -Familiarity with R or python for data analysis would be an asset to the lab, but not necessary. -Ability to work with CRISPR/Cas9 technologies to genetically edit cells would be useful, but not necessary.
