The Department of Urology has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist 4 to join their team. POSITION PURPOSE

Evaluate and perform advanced research on prostate-related diseases using existing mouse models, standardized cellular and biochemical techniques to develop unique/novel. Perform research independently with rare oversight from the Principal Investigator. The applicant will develop novel research methods to investigate the molecular mechanisms that regulate prostate inflammation, fibrosis, and cancer, as well as perform advanced scientific work, evaluating, selecting and applying standardized and modified scientific procedures and techniques to assignments with clear, specific objectives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Perform Lab Manager Function (20%) – including but not limited to:

  • Train new lab personnel (post docs and graduate students) in standard lab techniques.

  • Collaborates with PI and postdoctoral researchers to improve organizational efficiency of the lab.

  • Provides extensive input to the benefit of the research projects of the lab.Laboratory Research (at the bench) resulting in first author or co-author publication papers (80%)

  • Perform novel laboratory research using techniques such as mouse models, transurethral inoculation, cell culture, immunostaining, RNA-in-situ, western blot, and molecular biology.

  • Investigate molecular mechanisms that regulate prostate inflammation and fibrosis in the prostate-related diseases including prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

  • Independently manage multiple complex research projects including evaluation of proposed and ongoing projects with ability to submit for grants and serve as PI of awards received directly.

  • Collaborate within UW, and national and international peer networks to enhance the research of the lab, including conference attendance, and invited research presentations.

  • Generate data for publication as co-authors or first author if possible.

  • Help PI prepare for grant application in addition to applying for grants independently. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Candidate must have a Master’s Degree in Biology, Zoology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Animal Science or related field and at minimum of four years’ experience working in a prostate cancer research laboratory. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience in phase contrast microscopy, flow cytometry, histology and / or immunohistochemistry and in biochemical techniques.

  • Candidate must be willing to work with biohazards, including, but not limited to, human and animal tissues and their bodily fluids.

  • The candidate will be required to participate in the Occupational Health Program.

  • The candidate will be required to attend, participate, and pass (where required) the University of Washington’s training courses in Bloodborne Pathogens, Chemical Hazards, and additional courses as required for successful completion of job duties.

  • Responsibilities are task oriented therefore some weekend and evening work will be required.

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • PhD in Biology, Zoology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Animal Science or related field and a minimum of five years of experience working in a prostate cancer research laboratory with knowledge of working with animal subjects, preferable as a postdoctoral scholar. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This position requires work outside of the standard work week and is categorized as “essential” due to need to care for animals. Other This position is eligible for H-1B sponsorship. DISQUALIFICATIONS

  • The prostate cancer research lab is a fragrance- and cigarette smoke-free area. Smokers are not eligible for this position.
