The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for Research Scientist 2 – Genetics.

The Research Scientist 2 will support clinical research projects within the genetics division of Lab Medicine and Pathology. The genetics division is a national leader in several areas of precision diagnostics, including molecular oncology, diagnosis of rare diseases, and prenatal screening.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Research Lab Operations · Demonstrate standard operating procedures of lab instrumentation for users · Assist with troubleshooting of laboratory equipment · Isolate DNA from biological specimens on a routine basis · Perform established next-generation sequencing techniques on Illumina platforms · Operate laboratory instrumentation and contribute to routine maintenance · Execute and perform standard QC procedures throughout assay workflow · Troubleshoot as necessary with research staff to assess problems arising within the workflow · Communicate with lab members and project leadership to accomplish study aims · Provide guidance and training for junior lab members and clinical staff for established and new assay protocols · Collaborate with groups of technical staff for successful data generation and analysis

Research Software/Admin · Advance software applications and NGS automation workflows · Support development of software tools to streamline processes · Develop and optimize programming scripts to accommodate workflow needs · Function within a team of technical staff to carry out laboratory information system enhancements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: · Bachelor’s degree in genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or other life sciences fields; · Two years of genetics or molecular biology laboratory experience

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. Desired Requirements:
· Comprehensive understanding of molecular biology concepts and methods · Excellent and written communication and documentation skills · Experience in a high throughput laboratory environment · Experience automating biological sample prep · Knowledge in programming languages · Understanding of the principles of cancer genetics and clinical molecular diagnostics · Familiarity with NGS workflows

Conditions of Employment:
· It will be necessary to work in other departmental locations in order to meet patient service requirements, especially at Harborview Medical Center. In addition, less frequent work effort will be required at other UW School of Medicine locations (e.g., South Lake Union) and Seattle-area healthcare institutions. · Will be considered essential staff and as such will be required to report to work when scheduled despite inclement weather. · Must be able to meet with all shifts on a regular basis
