Our Prosthetic Engineering research and design team seeks a Research Instrument Engineer 2 eager to make a positive difference in the lives of people with lower-limb loss. Our group has a 25-year history of creating new sensing modalities for prosthetists and amputee patients, most of them involving portable sensors for field use. Data from our systems provide key insight to clinicians treating amputee patients and provide feedback signals to automated control systems that adjust prosthetic sockets during use so as to maintain fit, function, and high-level performance. The position purpose is to conduct electronic and firmware design in the prosthetic science and technology program in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington. The program involves a number of projects and researchers as well as the public, i.e. human subject volunteers with limb loss. The candidate will exercise independent engineering skill and judgment to advance development of bioengineering aspects of innovative technologies in prosthetics.


Under limited supervision of the Principal Investigator and senior research/engineering staff, integrate knowledge of practical electrical engineering skills to create effective instruments that allow testing of research hypotheses. Specific duties include:

Electronics development: • Design and review of new electrical instrumentation, schematics, and circuit boards - mostly for portable monitoring on people with limb amputation. • Circuit board testing, troubleshooting, and repair. Conduct design changes to improve instrument manufacturability and reliability. • Design and implementation test protocols for instrument qualification and acceptance testing. • Conduct and maintain regular calibration of instruments and assemblies.

Firmware: • Code microcontrollers and other elements of custom portable sensing systems to accomplish research study objectives for remote monitoring. • Develop procedures for calibration of newly designed instruments.

Maintain existing instruments: • Maintain existing custom instruments including a portable bioimpedance monitor, a prosthetic socket release-relock system, a socket fit monitoring system, and an auto size-adjusting socket to maintain prosthetic fit. • Manage inventory and purchasing of electronic and mechanical components. • Specify alternatives or replacements for obsolete or unavailable components. • Other duties as assigned (participate in lab meetings; collaborative research activities; prepare research data, facts, figures in publishable form).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS • Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical engineering, material science engineering, or a related science or engineering discipline. • Two years of relevant experience.

Additional Requirements: • Demonstrated ability to design a mechanical system or a mechanical material effectively to address an intended goal. • Proficient in computer design and analysis software. • Proficient in Matlab. • Ability to independently prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines; ability to delegate tasks and seek help. • Willingness and ability to learn new systems and to implement new processes in response to changes.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.

DESIRED REQUIREMENTS • Master of Science degree in engineering. • Demonstrated knowledge of complex custom electromechanical system. • Capability to write manuscript-quality description of analysis methods and results.
