The UW Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (DAID) has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Research Coordinator (E S 6). This position will support UW - Public Health-Seattle and King County (PHSKC) HIV/STI Research Group on several ongoing studies: 1) an NIH-funded study evaluating a new nucleic acid amplification test in syphilis; 2) a randomized trial to determine whether giving patients receiving HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) the option to self-collect specimens for ongoing monitoring at home increases retention on PrEP; 3) a study evaluating the oropharyngeal resistome in commensal Neisseria species; 4) a study evaluating a serological test for mpox; and 5) a discrete choice experiment among people with HIV designed to determine their preferences for how public funds should be used to improve HIV care.

The responsibilities of the Research Coordinator (RC) position is to manage the development, oversight, and execution of these studies of the HIV/STI Research Group. The RC will have minimal supervision in performing assignments. The candidate must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and utilize their resourcefulness, independent problem-solving skills, excellent time management skills, attention to detail, and negotiating skills and be adept at communicating priorities about the projects. The RC will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Co-Investigators, other Research Coordinators, Regulatory Coordinators, collaborators, and study stakeholders to execute these various studies.

Position Complexities: This position requires operational knowledge of the University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center and requires in-depth understanding of the research process and ability to integrate this knowledge with research priorities to implement programmatic goals. The RC will implement study protocol and procedures for several different studies related to HIV; oversee the clinical research communication system pertaining to recruitment, study visits, and participant inquiries; and manage the collection of study data and specimens. This position requires the ability to work independently with minimal oversight and the skills to prioritize activities and multi-task to complete multiple scopes of work without benefit of written policies or procedures.

Position Dimensions and Impact to the University: The University of Washington is committed to the research that is an integral part of the PHSKC HIV/STI Research Group where we can gain a further understanding and knowledge in HIV risks and preventions of infectious diseases. The RC will be participant-facing and will also work closely with UW investigators, PHSKC epidemiologists, disease intervention specialists, and clinicians. The RC’s work will contribute significantly towards meeting project goals and gaining growth into infectious diseases research on HIV.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Research Study Operations (50%)

  • Recruit human subjects for research studies, explaining the purpose of research studies and protocols and obtaining informed consent and enrollment from interested patients.

  • Interpret and apply study protocols.

  • Pay research subjects upon study completion and maintain financial records.

  • Monitor study eligibility.

  • Data entry - record and input participant clinical data.

  • Maintain and update databases of research subjects.

  • Assist with development of study protocols to ensure appropriate fit with local resources

  • Identify and help resolve study-related challenges such as recruitment challenges and logistical issues.

  • Track study visits and completion of research activities to facilitate protocol adherence, billing compliance, and to ensure accurate and reliable data collection.

  • Organize transport of biospecimen samples between clinical areas and laboratory, maintaining enrollment supply inventory.

  • Assist with other study procedures as needed.Protocol Developments & Project Updates (20%)

  • Coordinate monthly and quarterly reporting of research activity.

  • Prepare Human Subjects Division/Institutional Review Board applications and modifications.

  • Perform routine data quality control measures to ensure study data is accurate and up to date.

  • Assist in analyzing data to be presented at conferences or published in scientific journals.

  • Monitor several projects and produce monthly reports to document project progress.

  • Create and revise study materials, either independently or in collaboration with team members, to include case report forms, standard operating procedures, study operations manuals, and other study-related materials as needed.

  • Aid in the development of research analytical plans that support research data.Clinical Participant Communications (20%)

  • Field and respond to study questions or troubleshooting around research activities via email, phone and text.

  • Send study surveys (monthly) and updates via an electronic mailing list.

  • Schedule participants for study appointments.External Team Communications & Collaboration (10%)

  • Participate and represent UW in study-related meetings and conference calls, related to multiple studies.

  • Respond to inquiries from UW and external investigators regarding recruitment status, study timelines, and research protocols.

  • Collaborate with teams and individuals conducting related work in the Sexual Health Clinic

  • Participate in writing study manuscripts. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Health or a related field. Equivalent experience can substitute for degree requirement. At least one year of experience to including:

  • Prior experience in an academic research environment, clinical research, laboratory research, project coordination, research data collection related to human health.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of research involving human subjects, implementation and analysis, excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Able to work independently, self-starter, take on a leadership role whilst also being a team player; to maintain positive vision, sense of humor, and flexibility; to multi-task as priorities change, maintaining a professional demeanor at all times.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, ability to multitask with competing priorities, independent problem-solving skills, and excellent time-management skills. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Related college coursework or training with sexually transmitted infections, HIV, or sexual health.

  • Experience or knowledge working in a clinical setting.

  • Certification in Good Clinical Practice.

  • Human subjects ethics training.

  • DMID source document and regulatory document training, HIPAA and other clinical research training.

  • Experience with EPIC/ORCA/MINDSCAPE/MAX/LIS record systems.
