Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Release of Information Specialist in Seattle, Washington

The Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), located in Seattle, Washington, is part of a dynamic collaboration among three organizations known nationally and internationally for their patient care and research: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, and Seattle Children's. Over the past 25 years, these institutions have worked together to support their mission of adult and pediatric oncology patient care services, research and education.

The Release of Information Specialist reviews, validates, and processes requests for release of protected health information (PHI). Retrieves and processes release of PHI from electronic systems and paper medical records as requested by providers, insurance companies, patients, attorneys, third-party payers, disability and workman’s compensation providers. Provides PHI following Washington State and Federal HIPAA laws, SCCA policies, and HIM principles.

  • Retrieves and processes release of PHI from electronic systems and paper medical records as requested by providers, insurance companies, patients, attorneys, third-party payers, Disability and Workman’s Compensation providers

  • Reviews and validates ROI requests of all types for the use and disclosure of protected health information (PHI) according to state and HIPAA laws for all requests

  • Ensures all appropriate requests for release of PHI are completed in a timely and accurate manner following Federal and Washington State Laws

  • Ensures requests are completed per HIM Department processes, including contacts with patients and staff for clarification, as needed

  • Invoices billable requests in accordance with Washington State Law

  • Provides necessary patient records for compliance with all regulatory audits requested by the Integrity Department

  • Processes requests for billing records from provider billing (UWP) and Medicare (CERT)

  • Effectively communicates ROI issues to Manager

  • Acts as a resource for staff regarding ROI questions

  • Performs other reasonably-related HIM duties as assigned by HIM leadership

  • Meets productivity standards as determined by HIM leadership

Required:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited Health Information Management program or related program, or equivalent experience

  • One year of release of information familiarity and experience

  • Highly organized with ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously

  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer data entry skills

  • Knowledge of health information management operations and HIPAA guidelines

  • Ability to interact with many types of internal and external customers in a flexible, accommodating manner

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well (in both verbal and written formats) with patients, staff, providers and external partners

  • Demonstrated customer service excellence using telephone-based communication

  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment based upon departmental policies and procedures

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite applications, ORCA, Epic, and WebROI software

Preferred:

  • RHIT, RHIA preferred or commensurate credential preferred

SCCA has a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy, and there are no exceptions for any employee who is patient-facing and/or requires access to SCCA facilities.
