The Institute for Learning and Brain Sciences (I-LABS) is an interdisciplinary research organization dedicated to the study of early learning and brain development in childhood. I-LABS has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Public Information Specialist responsible for 'translating' leading-edge science into relevant and actionable messages that will help constituents promote early learning and brain development in children. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The primary work is development and delivery of content for webinars, workshops, training materials and online courses that will expose trainers, educators, healthcare and other child welfare professionals to cutting-edge research on children's development. In addition, the person will participate in the development of written articles and handouts, visual and/or audio resources (such as videos and podcasts), or interviews to communicate breaking scientific information to a broad audience. Finally, this person will work in partnership with groups in the community to provide original materials and feedback on third party materials concerning early learning and the brain, as well as collaborating to co-create relevant and actionable resources for communities nationwide. The person will have a deep knowledge of child and brain development and/or early childhood education. A Ph.D. in developmental, neuroscience-related, or education discipline is preferred, but equivalent job experience will be considered. All applicants must have two-three years’ experience speaking to/writing for a variety of audiences to communicate research-based material. In addition, expertise in children’s language development, social and emotional development or in developmental neuroscience is highly desired. The ability to synthesize and simplify complex scientific information while maintaining scientific legitimacy and the ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people in a wide variety of environments is required. Experience communicating to non-scientific audiences preferred. Experience with social media platforms and adobe creative suite is also preferred. 40% This position will be responsible for 'translating' the leading-edge science of I-LABS into actionable resources and messages that will help constituents to promote early linguistic, cognitive, social/emotional, and brain development in children nationwide. This will take the form of resources for parents and educators, including for example written articles, videos, one-pagers, flyers and more. In addition, this position will require delivering talks, trainings, and webinars, hosting tours and/or giving interviews about early learning and the brain. 40% Develop materials and tools for the early learning professional development community, such as online training modules, webinars, podcasts, handouts. These will be integrated into the current professional development landscape through written and multimedia content for use in community college courses and other nationwide training programs. I-LABS partners with many groups and this position will also provide feedback and fact check for partners about the accuracy of their material on early learning and the brain. 10% Coordinate and manage requests for information by educators, the press, policymakers, healthcare professionals, educators and parent groups. 10% Assist in the development of print (such as press releases or news articles) and electronic media (such as web sites) to communicate breaking scientific information to a broad audience. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Ph.D. or equivalent degree, or related experience in developmental, education or neuroscience-related discipline. Two-three years professional experience speaking to/writing for a variety of audiences to communicate scientific material. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Excellent interpersonal and speaking skills Ability to synthesize and simplify complex scientific information into relevant resources while maintaining scientific legitimacy. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS Illustration, graphic design, or video production experience and familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and/or video/audio/image editing experience. Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people in a wide variety of environments. Flexibility and ability to adapt to new projects, job content, and partnerships. Collaborative mindset. Excellent time management skills. Night and weekend work will occasionally occur. Out of state travel will occasionally be required.
