This position provides year-round, part-time technical support to researchers, instructors, and students at the Friday Harbor Labs: it is responsible for maintaining scientific equipment and instructing researchers in its use, as well as serving as FHL liaison with the UW Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Biological Safety program and the UW Office of Animal Welfare (OAW).
Friday Harbor Laboratories is a marine field station located 100 miles north of Seattle near the town of Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. This position is in-person in the San Juan Islands. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• 50%: Ensure that common-use research equipment is functioning, either directly performing maintenance and repairs or arranging for required specialists to perform it. Ensure that common-use equipment has sufficient written SOPs. Assist resident and visiting researchers with using equipment and instrumentation, including providing initial training as needed.
• 15%: For new common-use research equipment, set the standards for appropriate applications and user training; determine the schedule and procedures needed for maintenance. Participate in grant writing efforts to acquire equipment. Monitor existing budgets for available funds for purchase or repair of equipment, and work with Director and Stockroom Manager to initiate these expenditures as funds permit.
• 5%: Assist with design and setup of researcher lab space by providing familiarity with available resources and equipment.
• 10%: Assist with issues of biological safety throughout FHL, serving as liaison with the EH&S Biological Safety program as needed for particular research spaces, and helping researchers to meet and maintain compliance with EH&S regulations regarding these issues.
• 10%: Assist with animal welfare issues throughout FHL, helping researchers as needed to meet and maintain compliance with IACUC regulations. Serve as the point contact for the UW OAW regarding all visiting researchers proposing to work with organisms falling under the UW IACUC purview. Inform OAW of any such researchers, and ensure that the researchers have approved protocols before conducting their research at FHL. Ensure that all FHL research spaces approved by OAW for work on IACUC organisms are maintained in compliance with UW IACUC standards.
• 10%: Assist FHL waterfront staff with FHLOO (Friday Harbor Labs Ocean Observatory) equipment and Ocean Acidification Lab equipment and infrastructure.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• High School graduate or equivalent and two years of experience in research equipment maintenance, biological safety, OR animal welfare compliance • OR Equivalent education/experience
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s in Biology or other relevant field • Minimum 5 years of experience in a biological research laboratory environment. • Minimum 5 years of experience in the use, maintenance, and/or repair of research equipment. • Expertise in the use, maintenance, and/or repair of laboratory equipment used for microscopy, cell culture/microbiology, molecular biology, and marine science. This includes core equipment such as autoclaves and research grade water purification systems. • Demonstrated ability and comfort communicating with manufacturers, technical support and service technicians to find solutions for broken equipment or to meet a researcher’s need. • Familiarity with UW main campus equipment resources such as UW surplus, and equipment or instrumentation repair shops. • Experience with university lab and chemical safety requirements and inspections. Understanding of IACUC needs and regulations. • A collaborative, creative and supportive disposition focused on helping researchers and instructors set up functional lab spaces for their work.
