The Applied Physics Laboratory, University of Washington (APL/UW) is a premier center for research, development and advanced education in science and engineering. APL/UW was formed in 1943 at the request of the U.S. Navy to bring university resources to bear on urgent WWII defense problems. From a wartime beginning focused on effective torpedo exploders, APL/UW initiated acoustic studies and oceanographic research programs to understand how variations in the ocean environment affected the performance of Navy systems. Decades of acoustic and oceanographic studies yielded an understanding of the world's deep oceans.
Today our scientists and engineers make important contributions to understanding the earth's climate cycles with satellite and in situ sensing of ocean winds, currents, and air-sea fluxes; observations of Arctic sea ice, its variations and effects on mid-latitude oceans; and ocean tomography that reveals how the abyssal ocean mixes and sequesters carbon. APL-UW continues to lead research in the basic and applied physics of sound—from sonars used to probe the geology of the deep ocean floor to hand-held high-frequency focused ultrasound devices to image and stop internal bleeding without surgery.
APL has an outstanding opportunity for a Principal Research Scientist. This recruitment is open to UW Office of Research employees only.
The work of this role will involve research and development in the areas of identity management and privacy, and overall research program management and strategic guidance in support of military funded identity management and privacy program goals.
The aim of the research projects is to determine and mitigate vulnerabilities, investigate architectures, technical approaches, studies, policies, processes, technologies, tools, and proofs-of-concept of information network infrastructure. This will improve information system channel integrity to meet the varying security, identity-management, and privacy requirements of units of government, commerce and civil society. These requirements are dependent on such systems being reliable for the benefit of the homeland security enterprise and the enhancement of security, integrity and trusted system operation that it serves.
Program and Project Management - Generate and manage Project Execution Plans - Engage with relevant stakeholders and project partners - Plan technology transition with sponsoring agencies - Schedule and track work products - Report progress to project sponsors
Research and Development - Investigate risk-based approaches to confirmation of identity in a manner that leads to trust - Research data and application security at rest and in transit - Automate control of personal data to minimize cognitive overload and privacy risk - Address privacy concerns with connected devices, mobile computing, and sensor platforms -Ensure adequate addressing of privacy concerns with big data and algorithms
Procure future funding - Interact with sponsoring agencies and submit proposals for future work - Research Sponsors/Stakeholders (e.g. NIH, NSF, other schools or research institutions, etc.) - Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
Professional Doctorate (J.D.) or equivalent. Equivalent experience can substitute for degree requirement.
At least six years of experience conducting sponsored research in the area of identity management systems and privacy-enhancing and cybersecurity information networks.
- Extensive knowledge of identity management systems and privacy-enhancing and cybersecure information networks.
- Extensive knowledge and experience with interdisciplinary issues involved in the research, conception, design, development and deployment of integrated policy/technical solutions in multiple contexts in governmental, commercial and educational domains.
- Experience with analyzing, evaluating, and integrating identity and information network architectures and systems from multiple perspectives.
- Demonstrated ability to organize, collaborate, and guide the work of multi-stakeholder groups involved in the research of information networks, identity management and privacy business, and related legal and technical issues.
- Experience working with technical and policy standards setting, domestically and internationally.
- Strong written and oral presentation skills.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
