Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Post Doctorate Research Associate - Chemical Engineer/Materials Characterization in Seattle, Washington

Overview

PNNL’s Coastal Sciences Division develops and deploys coastal science and engineering capabilities to empower a scientific approach to energy, environment, and security. Our capabilities include Earth system science modeling, ultratrace detection, comprehensive numerical modeling, development and testing of marine energy technologies, environmental monitoring, and water quality and biogeochemical process modeling.

Responsibilities

The candidate will participate in developing new technologies in critical mineral extraction and separation as well as technology commercialization using process modeling and analysis. Additional responsibilities include the following:

  • Perform wet lab chemical experiments and inorganic materials characterization

  • Design and build chemical reactors with controlled fluid flow

  • Develop engineering process flow diagrams to conduct chemical engineering modelling

  • Interact, communicate, and solve problems with a diverse team of research staff within and beyond the immediate research group

  • Perform customer discovery interviews for taking technologies from lab to market

  • Present research at technical conferences and project/program review meetings and publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. Degree in chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, or a related field.

  • Is knowledgeable with chemical laboratory environments and understands materials characterization techniques (XRD, SEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, FTIR, Raman etc.)

  • Is familiar with industrial scale processing and equipment to help inform scale-up efforts.

  • Comfortable working with a variety of control, processing, and analysis software (Python, Labview, Matlab, Mathematica, Aspen Plus)

  • Demonstrated ability to both work independently and in collaborative teams.

  • Able and willing to work independently in both the PNNL laboratory and offsite environments.

  • Excellent technical writing skills and a track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to engage with external partners and collaborators.
