UW Medicine Information Technology Services (ITS) and Pharmacy Services have an outstanding opportunity for a FULL-TIME PHARMACIST IT ANALYST (Day Shifts). The Pharmacist IT Analyst will work closely with the other Epic application teams in support of the EpicCare Ambulatory application. In addition, the individual will assist with planning, designing, and implementing Epic Pharmacy enhancements and major upgrades, and will support the work of the Epic Pharmacy team.

This position is a critical component of the ongoing implementation and integration of UW Medicine’s EMR in support of the organization’s regulatory, academic, and financial goals. The application environment within UW Medicine includes multiple electronic medical record (EMR) systems, departmental systems, interfaces, and clinical data repositories. An understanding of the applications and their integration with Epic is critical to the Pharmacist IT Analyst's success.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILIITES:

ANALYSIS, DESIGN, AND BUILD: The Pharmacist IT Analyst maintains expertise in all aspects of Epic pharmacy and clinical applications in order to analyze, design, build/configure, validate, implement, and provide ongoing maintenance for Epic pharmacy and clinical applications tools and system functionality.

Duties include:

  • Participate in system design, build, validation, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of the Epic Clinical Applications, as well as provide support for other related Epic clinical systems.

  • Thoroughly document and understand providers' practice methods, clinic operations, processes, and patient interactions, and how the Epic Clinical Applications support these processes.

  • Work with practices to make system changes, workflow changes, and other system design decisions that support clinic operations while maintaining team standards and allowing for sustainable long-term maintenance.

  • Leverage best practices and documentation provided by Epic through its Epic UserWeb and Community Library.

  • Develop and execute test plans for usability, performance, and adherence to standards.

  • Provide expert knowledge to optimize the design and development of systems.

DEFINE CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Act as an Epic-certified expert resource to UW Medicine staff by anticipating and identifying educational, procedural, and functional problems associated with the implementation and use of new applications.

  • Mentor Epic Pharmacy Analyst teammates on how to perform these functions.

  • Translate complex business requirements into design specifications, propose alternatives, recommend solutions, and effectively communicate issues and risks to stakeholders in a timely manner.

  • Meet with customers to identify system needs and escalate issues as needed.

  • Set appropriate expectations of customer requirement fulfillment.

  • Define screens, reports, and processes (manual as well as automated).

  • Make recommendations regarding system use and the setting of priorities for development and implementation efforts.

  • Highlight issues relating to system integration points between other applications or interfaces.

LIAISON AND COMMMUNICATION WITH CLINICAL USER GROUPS:

  • Provide supportive and positive mechanisms for reporting application and system deficiencies, and facilitate reporting of suggestions for system improvements.

  • Using quality improvement principles, monitor system impact on user and departmental workflows, and incorporate results into system enhancements.

  • Attend or lead user advisory committees as required.

  • Act as a liaison and/or facilitate communication between end-users and vendor as appropriate.

  • Work with internal customers and user groups to provide diagnostic assistance, resolution to questions, and problem direction. This includes facilitation between end-users and other UW Medicine IT Services teams for resolution of system problems.

  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with all levels of users regarding changes to systems.

  • Drive best practices through system, clinical operations, and business processes knowledge.

  • Translate clinical methodologies into customer requirements, business, and technical specifications and documentation.

  • Provide oral and written communications to end-users and other Epic support staff in a professional manner that focuses on ensuring clear communications and addresses the needs of the recipient.

  • Promote and champion Epic Pharmacy and Clinical Applications during all interactions with users.

DOCUMENTATION:

  • Document technical and business requirements/specifications for Epic Pharmacy and Clinical Applications.

  • Document current and proposed data flows, both within Epic and as Epic interacts with other systems and interfaces.

  • Identify need for, document, and implement support plans.

  • Develop and document standard IT operational procedures.

  • Document system changes in accordance with organizational change control procedures.

PROBLEM RESOLUTION:

  • Assist in resolution of complex application and process problems.

  • Perform analysis and troubleshooting for complex application issues to meet established Service Level Agreements.

  • Manage and maintain issue tracking (both internally and with vendor) and follow issue tracking policies and guidelines.

  • Provide regular status updates to management, customers and stakeholders.

  • Work with vendor to set clear problem resolution priorities and communicate these priorities.

  • Mentor less-experienced teammates on proper issue tracking and resolution policies and procedures.

MANAGE, PRIORITIZE, AND PERFORM PROJECT TASKS:

  • Be responsible for the successful completion of project tasks.

  • Assist with implementation of sub-projects that may include cross-functional teams.

  • Report progress on assigned tasks to project manager or other designated lead/manager.

  • Track detail status of each task and work with lead, project manager, or supervisor should tasks vary from initial resource estimates.

  • Oversee results of application and system testing.

  • Work with designated lead, supervisor, or project manager to prioritize tasks.

  • Create project documentation, including monthly status report to stakeholders and sponsors.

OTHER DUTIES (as required):

  • Support training and education program as needed.

  • Coordinate all system information requests and trouble reports, including flow, tracking, and prioritization.

  • Participate in system management tasks including performance reporting and planning.

  • Assist with development of security and confidentiality system standards for applications to meet federal, state, CMS, and JCAHO regulations.

  • Follow UW Epic Pharmacy and Clinical Applications build standards and change control processes, with a focus on enterprise build and long-term system maintenance.

  • Work with manager to set professional goals for career development.
