UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW’s IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UW-IT provides critical technology support for three campuses, UW Medicine, and research operations around the world. UW-IT partners with the UW community to enable innovation, learning, discovery, and service.

Within UW-IT, the Networks & Communications Technologies (NCT) unit supports several networks of varying scales from campus to international - including the three University of Washington campuses (approximately 100,000 students & staff) with associated labs and facilities throughout the region; UW Medicine (3 hospitals and over a dozen clinics across the state); the Washington State K20 Education Network (connecting 400 school districts); the Pacific Northwest Gigapop, the regional point of presence for research & education networking; the Pacific Wave international R&E peering facility; and the C3 optical ring around Lake Washington. We also design, deploy, and operate partner-owned fiber, DWDM, and commercial third-party ethernet & cellular services. These networks use both open-source and commercial management systems to ensure stable and reliable operation for our customers.

We have an outstanding full-time opportunity for a Senior System Administrator in our Network Management Systems (NMS) team. The NMS team provides critical support for the day-to-day operation of the Wired, Wi-Fi and Telecom networks and systems of the University of Washington, UW Medicine, K20 and PNWGP. This role is responsible for ensuring that existing Network Management Systems are operating well day-to-day, ensuring that they are maintained, scaled, and licensed appropriately where appropriate, and is responsible for coordinating the evaluation and selection of new tools, working closely with the Network Engineering teams to gather and specify requirements.

You are a successful system administrator with experience designing, deploying and supporting usable, reliable and scalable Linux/Windows-based systems, both physical and virtual. You may have experience leading a small team – this role will not require you to act as a staff Supervisor or Manager, but to act as technical lead within the NMS team. Ideally you have relevant industry experience deploying and supporting Network Management Systems such as DHCP/DNS/IP, SNMP, RADIUS, syslog, config management, utilization/threshold alarming, etc. You can build and use scripts to automate routine processes using a language like Python. REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Engineering, Mathematics or related field or experience.

  • Four or more years of experience as a Linux/Windows systems engineer.

  • Experience administering physical and virtual Linux/Unix systems including containers; some basic Windows administration may be required.

  • Some experience configuring DNS services in a Linux/Unix environment using ISC BIND 9 or similar software. Knowledge of DNS protocol and system concepts including authority, delegation, recursion, caching, and client behavior.

  • Some experience configuring DHCP services in a Linux/Unix environment using ISC DHCP or similar software. Knowledge of DHCP protocol and system concepts including transactions, client behavior, and DHCP options.

  • Experience automating system engineering tasks using Unix shell scripts/Bash, Perl, Python, or similar.

  • Ability to respond to incidents outside of business hours as part of an on-call support rotation.

  • Ability to work effectively in a matrixed organization with minimal direct supervision and competing priorities from multiple stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated excellent written / oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, and personal interaction abilities. DESIRED:

  • Experience as an NMS engineer at a medium/large scale healthcare system or medium/large scale campus or ISP network, supporting networking services such as DHCP/DNS/IP, SNMP, RADIUS, syslog, config management, utilization/threshold alarming, etc.

  • Experience with configuration management or configuration-as-code tools such as Ansible, Terraform, Chef, Puppet, or similar.

  • Experience using task automation and configuration management languages such as Python and Windows PowerShell

  • Experience integrating DNS and DHCP services with a configuration database and management application.

  • Knowledge of networking concepts and protocols such as ARP, TCP, UDP, subnet organization/CIDR notation, some understanding of routing protocols.

  • Experience deploying and configuring relational database software such as PostgreSQL and MySQL.

  • Experience integrating SaaS and other vendor software with single sign-on and multi-factor authentication. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Working conditions include typical office environments and University Data Centers.Position participates in an on-call rotation and must be able to respond to outages during off-hours.UW expects staff to be in the office at least 2 days/week.This is an essential position and is required to report to work remotely when UW suspends operations.
