Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Mathematical Data Scientist 2 in Seattle, Washington


Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is looking for a early career researcher who can make significant contributions towards advancing our growing capability in the mathematics of data science. PNNL’s Data Sciences and Analytics Group emphasizes the development of new capabilities in discrete mathematics, computational topology, graph and hypergraph theory, geometric data analysis, and multi-relational data modeling applied to the analysis of data systems, especially in interaction with machine and deep learning systems, human-machine teaming, and complex systems modeling.

  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to the academic and research strength of PNNL including experience writing scientific publications demonstrating insight and discovery.

  • Effective written and oral communication.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively on diverse teams.

  • Demonstrated experience in applied data science computational platforms and/or languages such as Python environments, R, Matlab, Tableau, SQL, and PyTorch.

  • Demonstrated expertise in at least one mathematical specialty of interest. Examples include:

  • Computational topology, including persistent homology, topological data analysis, or applied sheaf theory

  • Hypergraph analytics and high order networks

  • Applied category theory

  • Geometric data analysis

  • Random matrix theory

  • Algebraic geometry

  • Statistical inference

  • Closely related areas in applied discrete mathematics, topology, geometry, or algebra

  • Additional experience in applying mathematical data science methods to data sets of scientific or technical domains is also highly desired. Examples include computational biology, geospatial intelligence, computer vision, and cyber analytics.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA with 2 years of experience

  • MS/MA with 0-2 years of experience

  • PhD with 0 years of experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science, or closely related field.

  • Relevant coursework including topology, graph theory, programming (Python specifically), discrete mathematics, probability, statistical inference, and/or machine learning.

Additional Information

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.

  • U.S. Citizenship Required.

  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.

  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.
