Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Materials Scientist 2 - Separations in Seattle, Washington
Overview
The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.
PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy's Office of Science.
Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate's researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.
Responsibilities
As a scientist in the Materials Sciences group, you will be performing experimental research as part of talented multi-investigator team aiming to explore nanomaterials discovery and chemical separations at non-equilibrium conditions. You will be developing experimental methods using microfluidics and gel-based reactions, building on recent successes from the group in using these strategies for separating metal ions from complex feedstocks. Some of the required characterization tools include scanning/transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), spectroscopy tools for chemical identification (Raman, ICP-MS), and scattering tools for phase and particle characterization (SAXS/WAXS). This research requires a close collaboration between physical chemists, engineers, theorists, and materials scientists, and you will be closely working with them to design the experimental methods, apply the concepts for separations, and characterizing products.
Responsibilities include:
Perform materials synthesis experiments using microfluidic and gel-based methods.
Perform characterization using SEM/TEM, Raman, and SAXS/WAXS, as well as corresponding data analysis.
Work independently, take initiative, and work on team assignments.
Lead manuscripts and contribute to proposal development efforts.
Interact, communicate, and tackle technical problems with diverse team of scientists.
Present research findings at technical conferences and project review meetings.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, or related field.
Proven background in chemistry, catalysis, and materials characterization.
Hands-on experience with scanning/transmission electron microscopy, spectroscopy tools.
Experience in data analysis using Python, Matlab, or similar platforms.
Experience with microfluidics, flow chemistry, or gel-based materials synthesis.
Foundational understanding of nucleation and crystal growth, principles of chemical separations, or ion transport under external fields.
