REI Manager of Cloud Engineering in Seattle, Washington

Overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Manager of Cloud Engineering in our Engineering Enablement team driving Back-End Platform engineering with an amazing community of engineers. In our team we are avid campers, cyclists, skiers, snowboarders, hikers, and ultimate frisbee players that all have a passion for where their hobbies converge with working on awesome technology to support REI customers.

The Engineering Enablement team is responsible for Cloud, Site Reliability, Integration and Developer Platforms. This role leads our Cloud Engineering team responsible for the Enterprise Cloud foundation in AWS as well as our Kubernetes platform. The Cloud Engineering team leads an Enterprise Cloud focus on governance, finance, security, network and account policy management that provides consistency across the REI Cloud foundation. The team is also accountable for a growing Kubernetes foundation as we work towards modernizing our container workloads.

In this role, imagine yourself doing these things as a ‘Manager of Cloud Engineering’ at REI:

  • Grow a Cloud cost optimization program in alignment with workload movements to our primary Cloud providers.

  • Embed tagging and policy as part of our Developer Platform pipelines for Cloud Native architectures

  • Be a technical product owner within Engineering Enablement influencing and driving technical investments for Cloud.

  • Grow and lead a team of engineers improving and optimizing Cloud build efforts for our REI Development community.

  • Guide technology surrounding continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) systems in context to build automation in the Cloud

  • Champion engineering and operational excellence and establish metrics and processes for assessment and improvements.

  • Enhance our Kubernetes foundation as we work to elevate more consistent ways to deploy Kubernetes workloads for our development teams.

  • Leverage a strong technical foundation and experience to provide appropriate guidance to a growing organization.

  • Work in an agile engineering area focused on continuous innovation and continuous improvement.

  • Be a t-shaped leader with authentic enthusiasm for helping engineers increase productivity and accelerate REI’s cloud journey.

  • Recruit new talent to contribute to the Cloud Engineering team.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

You bring these skills and abilities:

  • 5+ years of hands-on Cloud Engineering, network, IAM and security experience.

  • 3+ years of experience with building in Kubernetes environments (Rancher, EKS, etc.).

  • 3+ years of prior leadership experience as either an IC ‘Lead’ role or direct management context.

  • Ability to operate in a Product-led approach for Engineering.

  • Ability to develop deep partnerships with other leaders in the technology management community.

  • Hands on experience in Terraform; managing modules and state files at scale.

  • Ability to approve PRs for Cloud Engineering domain.

  • Experience with targeted Cloud cost reductions and continuous cost optimization.

  • AWS Certified Solution Architect certification or equivalent experience.

  • Proven experience in the following areas:

  • Building on ECS and/or EKS.

  • Scripting proficiency (Bash, Python, etc.).

  • Continuous Integration tools (Jenkins, etc.).

  • Building Security in Cloud and Integration platforms (auth, encryption, WAF, etc.).

Pay Range

$141,200.00 - $240,000.00 per year
