The CoMotion Innovation Development group provides services including intellectual property strategy and management, project development guidance, portfolio management, and license, confidentiality, and material transfer agreements.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Intellectual Property Paralegal. This position will report to the Director, Patents and will work closely with a team of patent experts and provide vital and complex support for patent preparation, filing, patent searches, and patent maintenance in connection with patents filed on UW technology as a result of the University's research activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Intellectual Property Administration - 70%

  • Review and process patent prosecution correspondence, docket patent deadlines in internal database and assist CoMotion’s internal patent team to ensure patent deadlines are met.

  • Draft and send instruction letters to engage patent counsel on patent applications and prosecution.

  • Provide support in the preparation and filing of selected patent applications for both U.S. and international patent applications and manage patent dockets related to such filings.

  • Facilitate information sharing between outside counsel and licensees on patent prosecution actions and budgets for licensed cases.

  • Prepare and process patent formal documents (patent assignments and declarations) for execution.

  • Prepare list of references for Information Disclosure Statements, coordinate retrieval of references and instruct counsel on filing.

  • Disseminate, track, and retrieve required legal documents necessary for patent prosecution.

  • Review and approve invoices from the University of Washington’s external patent counsel.

  • Be a point of contact for CoMotion Patent Team and liaise with researchers, attorneys, licensees, and other University units on administration processes of patent issues.

  • Occasional support for Trademark and Copyright Registrations.

  • Related database entry and administrative responsibilities.

  • Coordinate and perform patent and legal research required by the Director, Patents and Patent Portfolio Managers.

  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.Continuous Process Improvement – 30%

  • Collaborate with other departmental staff (i.e., Innovation Managers, License and Intellectual Property Associates, Compliance Managers, Finance, Business Operations Analysts, Database Engineers) on ensuring quality work and best practices.

  • Provide training, leadership, mentorship, and assistance to other staff on legal administrative work and legal policies and procedures.

  • Coordinate, facilitate and participate in team meetings.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to establish docketing, researching, and tracking protocols.

  • Investigate, triage, and outline solutions for Intellectual Property management needs.

  • Suggest updates to database design for proper Intellectual Property tracking. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of complex Patent Prosecution or Legal Administrative work experience or related work experience.

  • In depth knowledge of patent prosecution processes. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Paralegal certificate or equal education or experience.

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products.

  • Excellent organizational, administrative, interpersonal, problem-solving and decision-making skills

  • Ability to identify key intellectual property filing issues and impacts to next steps in perfecting ownership and breadth of rights.

  • Proven ability to exercise independent judgment, multi-task and meet required deadlines.

  • Collaborative team-player.

  • Proven ability to work well with diverse personalities in a team, and function well under pressure. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must live within commuting distance of UW Seattle Campus.

  • May be eligible for a hybrid work schedule.
