UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Campus Utilities & Operations, Building Services, Transportation Services and Safety. Supporting these groups, as well as the separate Emergency Management team, are the Business Intelligence & Information Technology group and the Finance & Administration group. Campus Energy, Utilities & Operations has an outstanding opportunity for an HVAC Control Technician to perform journey level work in the operation, inspection, testing, servicing and maintenance of mechanical, pneumatic, electronic and direct digital controls (DDC) for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) of the complex building systems. Primary Duties and Responsibilities • Troubleshoot and resolve operation and maintenance problems of complex building environmental control systems that are both pneumatic and DDC • Install, modify, diagnose, test, repair, calibrate and operate a variety of mechanical, pneumatic, electrical and electronic equipment in HVAC systems • Perform alteration, repair, and maintenance of buildings, facilities, and equipment • Suggest operation strategies for campus HVAC systems to ensure continuous and reliable service • Operate vehicles such as University vans and trucks to transport tools and equipment to various worksites • Respond to emergency situations such as HVAC outages in order to minimize or prevent loss of property, damage to research activities, and disruption to life-safety systems • Perform the work in accordance with applicable safety rules and environmental regulatory requirements and maintain records as required according to environmental requirements • Work with other trades to troubleshoot and repair system failures related to all aspects of the HVAC equipment and systems • Work with the preventive maintenance program on equipment, components, and systems • Assist with record keeping for the preventive maintenance program of the environmental control systems • Maintain and update system schematics through red line system changes and create if necessary, mechanical, pneumatic, and DDC system schematics • Participate in and follow through with Campus Engineering & Operations process improvement initiatives (Balanced Scorecard, Lean, Ideas Systems) • Comply with occupational health and safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the job, including the use of personal protective equipment whenever required; report safety infractions to the supervisor • Work with Engineering Services, Capital Planning and Development, contractors, Facilities trades, building occupants, and other clients as necessary for scheduled and planned required work • Operate a variety of hand and power tools • Demonstrate strong personal integrity, trustworthiness, responsibility and accountability • Possess the ability to handle stressful situations and changing priorities effectively • Demonstrate a positive, optimistic, success-oriented attitude • Demonstrate professional demeanor which includes being tactful, civil and courteous • Demonstrate professional work ethics • Follow all University and Facilities Services policies and procedures • Attend and actively participate in all required meetings and training • Perform other duties as assigned Core Competencies • Demonstrate personal integrity and trustworthiness • Manage stressful situations and changing priorities effectively • Anticipate, recognize and resolve problems • Be responsible and accountable • Use organizational skills and provide attention to details • Maintain a positive, optimistic, and success-oriented attitude • Exercise professionalism, which includes being tactful and courteous • Exhibit a professional work ethic • Continuously promote a safe work environment Requirements include: • Completion of a four-year approved institution course as a Control Technician Trainee; OR four years of applicable experience in installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical and pneumatic control systems Vocational or trade school training in control mechanisms may be substituted, year-for-year, for work experience up to a maximum of two years. Additional Requirements include: • Experience working with complex building environmental control systems, a wide variety of systems, and in the repair, service, maintenance, and operations of equipment, components, and systems • Ability to read and interpret blue prints related to building HVAC systems • Have possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license recognized by the State of Washington and have a good driving record • Must be strong team player and must be able to work independently and as a team member • Possess excellent skills in building a working crew harmony • Must possess excellent customer service, written and oral communication skills • Must be able to communicate appropriately with clients, staff and students to present a professional image • Must be conversant with at least one of the following DDC control systems: Johnson Controls Metasys (PMI or ADS/ADX), Siemens Apogee, Alerton (IBEX or BACtalk) • Experience in basic desktop computer skills, maintenance work request and work order programs • Have knowledge and understand of safe work practices and policies • Must be able to wear all proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. Desired: • Five or more years of experience, as an HVAC control technician working with complex building and laboratory environmental control systems, with a wide variety of systems and in the repair, service, maintenance, and operations of equipment, components, systems etc. • Experience with fume hoods and bio-safety cabinets • Have experience working independently as an HVAC control technician for a licensed HVAC contractor or as an employee of a public agency • Detailed knowledge in working with the DDC systems from Johnson Controls, Siemens and Alerton • Demonstrated ability to work with clients during building ventilation system shutdowns and inconveniences • Ability to work independently to improvise necessary system component repairs Conditions of Employment: • Must be able to work in a diverse workforce • Must be able to work outdoors under all weather conditions • Must be able to communicate effectively with staff and on portable hand-held radios • Must be able to lift or carry heavy objects, climb ladders, work in confined spaces, restricted movement areas, mechanical/electrical spaces, ventilation fan housing, etc. for extended periods of time and be able to climb ladders and work at heights • Must be able to work both independently and as a team member • Must be able to follow all Washington State safety rules and regulations • Must always maintain a professional appearance • The position requires working with asbestos containing equipment, following proper procedures • This position requires the wearing of personal protective equipment appropriate to the job task • Work in animal research areas with the proper personal protective equipment • Additionally, approved safety shoes must be provided at the employee’s expense and worn on the job • The position is subject to callback outside normal working hours to respond to emergencies, and occasionally scheduled overtime • Must be able to respond to system emergencies during regular business hours and outside of regular business hours • Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job • Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility, and the University of Washington Medical Center • Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment • Regular and predictable attendance is required As a UW employee, you will enjoy generous benefits and work/life programs.
