HOSPITAL SECURITY SERGEANT.

In addition to duties listed below, the focus of this position is to help ensure a secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors. The security team has a key role in maintaining a healing environment in a manner that is consistent with UW Medicine Patients Are First Service Culture guidelines. Security Sergeants provide assistance and problem resolution for patients, staff, and visitors.

While modeling UW Medicine Service Culture guidelines, Security Sergeants ensure compliance with select policies and act as liaisons with the nursing supervisor(s), administrative personnel, law enforcement agencies and fire department agencies. Sergeants directly supervise Campus Security Officers on all shifts; oversee work schedules and ensure adequate staffing; complete performance evaluations annually for all assigned personnel; and evaluate performance of officers to determine the need for training.

The successful candidate will possess superior customer service skills, offering support and understanding in dealing with patients, staff, faculty and visitors to the medical center. Able to tactfully confront individuals and gain their trust for authority, de-escalating anger to bring about satisfactory solutions. Ability to connect with people, regardless of socioeconomic status or ethnicity. Capacity to assess situations, anticipate challenges and resolve conflicts using quick, accurate judgments. Possess knowledge and ability to explain circumstances with sensitivity and discretion, mitigating stressful and potentially violent situations. Investigate incidents and crimes with the aptitude to complete clear, concise and accurate incident reports and other documentation. Perform routine and emergency locking of facility, possibly assisting in crowd control. Patrol and inspect interior and exterior of facility, on foot or in a vehicle. Respond promptly and safely to calls for assistance and “code” calls throughout UWMC. Assume control of emergency situations in cooperation with medical professionals, fire/police agencies and/or senior administration. Effectively operate a variety of equipment including portable radios, computers, closed-circuit and access control systems. Effectively interview people, gather evidence and prepare reports documenting investigatory steps and results. Serve as a member of the Fire Control Team and respond to alarms and other emergent situations. Investigate and deter crime and related incidents; inspect buildings for prowlers, vagrants, fire and safety hazards. Control and place restraints on patients at the direction of medical staff. Evict, hold or detain persons when directed to do so by the appropriate law enforcement agency, clinical or administrative authority. Provide escorts to patients, visitors or staff 24 hours a day. Facilitate the securing of weapons in a safe location. Provide funds escorts when requested. Possess superior attention to detail and observation skills. Supervise work of campus security officers; assigns duties, trains and evaluates officers; respond to calls backing subordinates when necessary/appropriate. Assist planning, scheduling and assigning shifts/sections. Review and approve incident reports. Assist in officer training and development; make recommendations for training programs. Conduct employee evaluations, hiring, promotions, discipline, termination of security staff. Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - High school graduation or equivalent; possession of a valid driver’s license; two years of work experience as a campus police, public safety or security officer, or equivalent; no previous felony convictions.
