CoMotion has an outstanding opportunity for a Head of Mentor Programs, CoMotion. Position Purpose: The Head of Mentor Programs will be responsible for directing the mentor program within CoMotion. Reporting to the Director of Innovation Investments, the Head of Mentor Programs will provide leadership, operational planning, overall strategic direction and day-to-day management of the program. The position will identify, manage, and assign mentors across all CoMotion programs that use mentor resources, including but not limited to Innovation Training programs, the Innovation Gap Fund, Postdoctoral Entrepreneurial Program, CoMotion Labs and its members, and others. The Head of Mentor Programs will actively identify, recruit, and maintain a mentor cohort that matches the needs of CoMotion’s programs, including but not limited to domain expertise and other factors. Additionally, the Head of Mentor Programs will work collaboratively across CoMotion to develop, deploy and maintain a customer relationship management system (CRM)-based platform to efficiently and effectively manage mentor engagement across CoMotion program offerings. This position will determine and set the goals and objectives for the mentor program, ensuring alignment with CoMotion’s strategic vision.

Position Complexities: The Head of Mentor Programs will initiate the bridge between University of Washington (UW) teams and mentors by expertly connecting teams to mentors. The Head of Mentor Programs will identify the various needs of UW teams and the aptitudes and skills of mentors to suggest successful matches for both parties. The Mentor Manager will understand the needs of the programs that use mentors and, working with program leads across CoMotion, organize mentors within these programs in a strategic and coherent manner. Gaining an understanding of CoMotion operations, interconnected services, and how mentoring can and should play a role in supporting programmatic and organizational goals and aspirations are critical to success.

Position Dimensions and Impact to the University: This position is responsible for all elements of CoMotion’s mentor program, from mentor identification and cultivation to engagement and stewardship. The role will have a direct impact on increasing translation of the university’s research into impact outside the institution and will play a critical role in increasing diversity and representation of innovators and entrepreneurs. The Head of Mentor Programs will play a key role in setting and achieving the program’s goals and objectives, contributing to the overall success and impact of CoMotion.

Position Responsibilities: Program Management and Leadership (60%) • Develop and lead a program that delivers high value for UW researchers, staff and mentors, and which accelerates the commercialization of UW innovations. • Establish trusted relationships with CoMotion program leaders, mentors, and “customers” (UW research scientists and staff members both engaged in translation and those considering it). • Create and engage a sustainable and representative pool of mentors; a pool that reflects the expertise and experience needed by UW innovators. Determine the right size of the mentor pool for CoMotion and appropriate metrics to determine program effectiveness. • Create and implement a consistent set of mentor onboarding activities, role descriptions, role expectations, mentor/team engagement processes, and post-engagement mentor/team satisfaction assessments. • Determine and set the goals and objectives for the mentor program. • Track the success of the mentor program’s goals and objectives and adjust as needed to ensure continuous improvement and alignment with CoMotion’s priorities. In partnership with CoMotion’s IT Business Analyst, operate and maintain accurate IT (Information Technology) systems which: 1) facilitate the identification, engagement, and evaluation of mentors, and 2) provide reporting tools, such as data visualization, to aid program evaluation and development. • Develop and maintain a set of performance metrics and success stories that can be used internally and externally. • Develop and lead a program that delivers high value for UW researchers and staff and mentors, and which accelerates the commercialization of UW innovations. • Partner with appropriate CoMotion staff to implement and maintain mentor database. • Coordinate with CoMotion marketing team to develop marketing strategy for mentor program. • In partnership with CoMotion events team, organize, plan, and implement mentor-focused marketing materials and mentor recruiting/recognition events. • Engage with UW Central Advancement to identify fundraising opportunities to support the mentor program.

Project Leadership (30%) • Establish pilot for collecting metrics that will serve as an annual scorecard for measuring performance including, but not limited to, metrics such as: o Mentor satisfaction o Mentee satisfaction o Mentor utilization o Mentor retention • Be seen as central point-of-contact for mentor recruitment and engagement. • Build mentor program to ensure adequate coverage of scientific domains and individual entrepreneurs’ needs. • Identify mentor opportunities and seek out people with the appropriate backgrounds to support innovation goals of CoMotion. • Create “success stories” for use on the CoMotion website and for mentor recruitment. • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the mentor program, adjusting as necessary to achieve desired outcomes and improve program performance.

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of progressively responsible leadership experience, or comparable experience.

Desired: Knowledge of the regional entrepreneurial community Demonstrated management experience, both project management and supervisory Understanding of mentor programs and how they impact entrepreneurship Experience in a university tech transfer office Knowledge of business development, economic development, or entrepreneurship Familiarity with running an innovation-based program
