About the Position:

 

This position is located at the Outdoor Recreation Information Center, an Interagency visitor contact station located within REI in Seattle, WA.  The primary purpose of the position is the dissemination of information, recreational pass sales, and interpretative assistance to the public through various means.

 

MAJOR DUTIES

Incumbent may perform any or a combination of the following duties:

Assists in developing specific objectives for interpretive programs and displays, providing input to the annual plan of work.  Inventories and prepares reports on the annual volumes of use, trends in public information needs, and public response to existing information output.

 

Participates in outreach events including military bases, classrooms, and local events that include a public lands theme.  Provides public lands information and issuance of non-fee specialty recreation passes including active duty military, veteran, disability, and fourth grader passes.  May conduct presentations on public lands safety, leave-no-trace, recreating responsibly, and recreational opportunities.

 

Maintains inventory of existing publications for public use. Prepares materials for targeted outreach events that promote the safe and responsible use of local public lands.

 

Ensures that the information desk is covered at all times, answers the phone and responds to emails. Greets visitors and responds to a variety of inquiries regarding Forest Service activities, programs, exhibits, facilities, policies, and functions.  Evaluates inquiries in order to provide the most useful and appropriate information or to suggest other options, such as alternate routes or activities.  Provides guidance to the public on rules and regulations, safety, leave-no-trace, and conditions on public lands and attempts to gain public cooperation in protecting resources from damage and pollution. Assists visitors and callers with informational searches, and with use of the reference library. 

 

Records and reports statistics including visitation, call volume, activities, and pass sales for project planning.  Keeps abreast of Forest related issues and acts as lead to other information desk co-workers as needed.  Participates in weekly staff meetings as other duties allow.

 

Works closely with other agencies and partnering Interpretive Association for the ordering, inventory, sales, and reporting of recreation passes.  Follows unit operating procedures for sales, auditing, and reporting of pass sales.

 

Performs regular daily activities for the reception area or visitor center, including but not limited to, daily opening and closing of the facility and maintaining the front desk.  Monitors public areas and updates the status of condition reports. Provides visitors with effective instructions on security and safety procedures and informs the supervisor of visitor needs.  Operates a variety of computer-based equipment.  Maintains a lost and found for visitors and staff.  Coordinates with site manager on Interpretive Association product activities including ordering, pricing, stocking, sales, periodic inventory, and reporting.

Coordinates with staff specialists and public affairs office to provide the latest, most accurate and appropriate information to the public.  Develops draft social media posts monthly for inclusion in forest wide communications. Researches and maintains an inventory of timely publications, brochures, posters, and informational handouts for the public.
