The Fire and Landscape Adaptive Management and Ecology lab (FLAME) within the Precision Forestry Cooperative (PFC) seeks seasonal field technicians for a summer data collection effort in the Lassen National Forest, CA. The technicians will participate in a post-fire oak regeneration and lidar burn severity project. Field data collection will involve locating and re-measuring a network of pre-existing forest plots centered around California black oak (Quercus kelloggii) populations. This dataset will be used to evaluate oak response to multiple burns with varying burn severities, as well as to derive lidar-based metrics of burn severity. We encourage applications from candidates from underrepresented groups.
Work Environment
This position will require outdoor work in conditions that may include steep and rough terrain, dense vegetation, inclement weather, and biting insects. Field plot locations are in post-burn landscapes, and may contain dead and dying trees, unstable soils, and substantial woody debris. Maintaining a safe working environment is essential. Individuals should be capable of working long days, during early morning to late afternoon hours. Accommodation may include hotels or shared living spaces such as barracks or house rentals and are paid for by the employer. Technicians will be given per diem compensation for food costs while working in the field.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Participate on field crew to accurately record field data, maintaining a safe work environment. (80%)
Assist with entry of data, assure data quality using established protocols. (10%)
Assist with development of field data collection protocols. (5%)
Performs related duties as required. (5%) MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in forestry, ecology or related field and 6 months of experience in forestry, ecology, or related field OR Equivalent combination of education/experience.Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience collecting detailed environmental data in a field setting.
Experience with data entry and quality control.
Demonstrated ability to work outdoors safely in remote and challenging terrain.
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and research scientists.
Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Sincere interest in learning about natural resource management, forestry and fire science.
Experience collecting vegetation or fuels data in rugged environments.
Knowledge of western US flora, particularly in Californian ecosystems.
Backcountry navigation skills and experience.
Wilderness First Aid certification.
