What you'll do here: + Provide a pragmatic approach to the architectural design of all software products using a modular, service oriented architecture. + Assist with development concepts such as speed of delivery, test driven development, ease of maintenance, and model-driven development + Collaborate with developers around the design of new features, review their existing software, and help refine their vision and make it practical + Make well-reasoned and pragmatic choices about the right mix of proven and innovative technology to make the platforms optimal to build on + Define API standards to support scale, extension, and versioning + Maintain technical and functional familiarity with key software platforms and products within the organization + Decide how solutions get customized and used by dozens of product teams + Development and maintenance of overall technology vision and roadmap + Review and make recommendations on existing platforms for continuous improvement + Development of technical standards related to the development of software applications + Development of technical frameworks (reference architectures and patterns) related to software applications + Research and evaluation (prototyping and POCs) of innovative and appropriate technologies + Research and analysis of technology trends + Assessments of vendors and technologies + Communication and education of internal partners + Resolve which platform should provide existing and new features + Hands-on development, independently and paired with software engineers + Provide consultation on projects + Tier 3 support for operational issues Skills you will need here: + Minimum 10 years of technology experience + Minimum 7 years of experience programming in a commercial environment, along with a consistent track record of delivering high-quality releases of complex systems on time + Knowledge of various software architecture methodologies and frameworks, with ability to customize to make practical + Ability to drive major changes via formal and informal influence + Excellent written and verbal communication skills + Current understanding of industry trends and latest web technologies is required + Ability to anticipate and design around potential problems that could impact user experience, scalability, security and reliability + Excellent, demonstrated creative and practical problem-solving and issue resolution skills + Ability to communicate complex technical concepts and value in business terms + Ability to communicate to technical teams the vision, strategy and reasoning driven by business + Up to 50% travel as required, expect 20% on average Preferred: + Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related engineering field + Knowledge of Higher Education Systems such as LMS, Assessment Engines, and/or Library Research space + Experience working in an Agile development environment, using XP programming practices Cengage Group is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action employer.
