The College of Engineering’s academic affairs unit is responsible for supporting a robust academic experience for students in the college. Student Academic Services (SAS) has a robust portfolio including advising, student engagement, and the first-year experience for 1,000 first-year students, student leadership for 100 engineering undergraduates through the Emerging Leaders in Engineering program, and academic support programs that serve 2,000 undergraduates through the Engineering Academic Center.

The ELE Specialist will support the College of Engineering’s goals to ensure undergraduate students are prepared with the appropriate leadership skills to be able to contribute to the public good. It does so specifically by providing infrastructure, organization, and support to the Emerging Leaders in Engineering (ELE) program. This flagship leadership program, which comprises three subprograms: Engineering Ambassadors, Engineering Design Coaches, and Engineering Peer Educators, also equips undergraduate student leaders to provide invaluable service that impacts first-year students as well as prospective students and families.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Program Coordination/Management (50%)

  • Lead Emerging Leaders in Engineering recruitment planning, including class visits, group info sessions, nomination process, and collaborate with the Marketing & Communications team in the college to publicize on social media.

  • Support the Emerging Leaders in Engineering application review committee by developing and leading norming training.

  • Build and manage complex spreadsheets for Emerging Leaders in Engineering application review.

  • Schedule group interviews and manage all communications with students about their status in the selection process.

  • Support the development and execution of ENGR 490: Engineering Leadership, the common Emerging Leaders in Engineering course, via input on curriculum and grading support as needed.

  • Liaise with Assistant Director of Academic Affairs to manage Time Schedule for ENGR 490 and 491 including days/times and classroom locations.

  • Develop an annual professional development curriculum for Emerging Leaders in Engineering with intentional emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion with at least one offering a quarter for students.

  • Create standard operating procedures for these professional development opportunities, lead communication efforts with students to support attendance and lead these events or coordinate speakers to do so.

  • Lead assessment efforts for the Emerging Leaders in Engineering program by developing surveys and evaluation tools, compiling data into meaningful summaries, and suggesting data-informed improvements to the program.

  • Focus on assessment of learning outcomes as well as the student experience and ensure alignment of program activities to program goals.

  • Develop a distinct framework for the Emerging Leaders in Engineering returner student experience from application through program completion that builds upon their previous experience in the program, elevates their responsibilities within the program, and ensures an intentional learning experience.

  • Develop a recognition experience/event for graduating seniors in the Emerging Leaders in Engineering program.

  • Research best practices in engineering student leadership programs to guide the Emerging Leaders in Engineering program leads with current trends, information, and data that may inform their approach.

  • Collaborate with cross-campus partners such as those in Husky Leadership Initiative and the Leadership minor to ensure the Emerging Leaders in Engineering program is aligned with the student leadership landscape across the University of Washington Administrative Responsibilities (45%)

  • Manage and track the data of the demographics and other relevant information about the annual cohort of Emerging Leaders in Engineering after selection. Share data with relevant stakeholders.

  • Track workflow associated with quarterly tasks, yearly events, and special projects.

  • Coordinate the Emerging Leaders in Engineering team meetings, planning sessions, and retreats by scheduling these meetings, booking rooms, creating agendas, and capturing notes.

  • Coordinate all logistics for Emerging Leaders in Engineering key programs such as orientation, annual retreat, pre-quarter training, and end of program celebrations/ELE commencement celebration including researching and booking spaces, arranging transportation, coordinating the procurement of supplies, tracking the budget, and creating standard operating procedures to outline each event.

  • Track Emerging Leaders in Engineering alumni.

  • Coordinate Emerging Leaders in Engineering program leads to develop an alumni communication plan.

  • Share alumni data with Advancement.

  • Partner with Advancement, Academic Affairs, and Huskies@Work and/or the Career Center @ Engineering to connect Emerging Leaders in Engineering alumni to meaningful engagement opportunities.

  • Partner with the web team to maintain the Emerging Leaders in Engineering website to ensure the information is current, accurate, and engaging; incorporate relevant data on program outcomes.

  • Coordinate any annual video projects of Emerging Leaders in Engineering students for social media or the website.

  • Provide additional coordination support for each specific Emerging Leaders in Engineering subprogram as needed. Support Student Academic Services Team (5%)

  • Participate regularly in professional development activities to support learning, growth, and best practices.

  • Perform duties as assigned to support the broader goals of Student Academic Services MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Science, Engineering, or Humanities Discipline

  • Two to three years of related working experience such as project/program management. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

  • Ability to identify areas for improvement, set priorities, and initiate solutions as a strong independent contributor and collaborative team member.

  • Demonstrated organizational skills including effectively managing various tasks in the context of a fast-paced environment while ensuring attention to detail, accuracy, and quality results.

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully plan and execute small and large-scale projects and events.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and the Google Suite.

  • Flexibility and availability for working weekday evening and/or weekend events. Frequency is anticipated to be around 1-2 times a quarter. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of higher education student development theory and leadership development theory.
