The College of Education supports about 300 students in 2 early learning undergraduate majors: Early Care and Education (ECE) and Early Childhood and Family Studies (ECFS). The Early Learning Scholarship Community Liaison will report to the Assistant Director for Undergraduate Academic and Student Services in their support of the early learning undergraduate teams (ECE and ECFS), and to share information about the Early Learning Equity (ELE) Scholarship provided by the Ballmer Group. The purpose of the gift is to diversify the early childhood education teacher workforce across the state of Washington in order to lead to systems change and greater equity in early learning.

This position will have primary responsibility for initiating and building relationships with communities, organizations, and institutions, and connecting them with program leadership, with an interest in early learning undergraduate programs, focusing on communities that have historically been underrepresented at the University of Washington and in the ECE and ECFS programs. Effectively accomplishing this work requires an in-depth and nuanced understanding of historically marginalized communities and the individuals and organizations within them, as well as the skills to convey the importance of higher education learning. Similarly, reciprocal partnerships also require articulation of community strengths and student priorities to university faculty, staff and leadership.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES In support of these efforts, the Community Liaison’s responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:

Initiate and maintain statewide long-term relationships with early learning leaders in communities, organizations, and community colleges led by and serving historically marginalized and underrepresented populations (in early learning and in higher education)

  • Represent the ELE scholarship to a wide variety of agencies, groups, and individuals seeking to establish, develop and maintain long-term community and educational partnerships as a bridge for early learning teachers and other employees/members to further their education in the early learning field.

  • Assess needs with early learning leaders in URM communities in the state to learn about their needs regarding BA degrees in early learning, including specific curricular needs

  • Identify challenges/barriers to students pursuing a BA at UW, either in ECE or ECFS

  • Work in close collaboration with the Lead Admission and Outreach Adviser to plan, design, and conduct in-person and online information sessions for small and large groups and share information about the early learning degree and certificate programs and scholarships and information about the other Ballmer supported programs

  • Provide advising referrals for prospective students to contact the Undergraduate Lead Admission and Outreach Adviser via email, admission advising sessions, or other software systems as appropriate. Successfully transition from establishing partnerships/relationships to operations support to:

  • Communicate and collaborate with UG leadership & staff, including undergraduate advisers, on information gathered from

  • Communities/individuals regarding challenges, barriers, and provide solutions to meet partnership and student needs

  • Collaborate with UG marketing team to identify marketing and communications strategy that includes outreach opportunities for undergraduate student recruitment

  • Develop clear timelines and monitoring progress, collaborating with applicable internal stakeholders to set priorities and ensure deliverables and milestones are met regarding ELE scholarship enrollment goals

  • Maintain accurate documentation of all activities, contacts and accounts through communication tools (e.g. Outlook, SharePoint, Google Apps) and relational CRM databases (e.g. Slate, TargetX, others).

  • Maintain a strong presence within early learning communities by attending community meetings, early learning coalition meetings, conferences, etc. to represent the ELE scholarship.

  • Collaborate with COE directors of other Ballmer efforts to strategize around identifying needs and coordinating outreach efforts

  • Maintain thought and work partnerships with relevant early learning initiatives/programs and student support programs within the college and UW community.

  • Provide recommendations and work with the advising team in shaping student retention strategies, especially for URM students.

  • Provide prospective/current student and others information regarding the Early Learning Equity scholarship, general financial aid, or other early learning degree/certificate opportunities, directing them to appropriate channels as necessary ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Submit budget needs and fiscal documentation (i.e. mileage, reconciliation, etc) to finance on as-needed basis

  • Attend occasional staff/faculty meetings and retreats

  • Other duties as assigned MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Community Development, Non-profit Management, Ethnic Studies, or related fields to include

  • 2-3 years of relevant experience Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work or volunteer experience in community-based settings and demonstrated skills, knowledge, and competence in working with a variety of individuals and organizations.

  • Strong demonstrated understanding of the systems of oppression and the need for equity-based approaches to partnership development with historically marginalized communities

  • Possess demonstrated experience fostering relationships with, and/or liaising between multiple stakeholders or constituencies

  • Ability to make connections between early learning leaders and student skills and learning needs

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain/manage details on a multitude of community organizations and high number of students DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience facilitating learning experiences of students from P-12 or higher education institutions.

  • Experience working with undergraduate students, especially first-generation and historically marginalized students

  • Ability to read situations and people well and communicate across organizational interests and student development levels.

  • Experience working with coworkers and students from diverse backgrounds, across intersecting identities including race, ethnicity, ability, socioeconomic status, gender, gender expression, age, sexual orientation, religion, country of origin, citizenship status, educational background, and language proficiencies.

  • Familiarity with policies and procedures of the University of Washington, Washington State Community and Technical College system, and/or other institutions of higher education CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
