Role Summary

The Director, Flight Operations Regulatory Compliance & Safety Systems leads a diverse team of aviation specialists, data analysts, and auditors to ensure Alaska Airlines operates in compliance with the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs). This leader also works within Flight Operations and cross-divisionally to set the long term strategy for ensuring processes and procedures remain within the guidelines of Alaska Airlines Safety Management Systems (SMS), and acts on behalf of Alaska Airlines in maintaining Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) operation specifications.

Scope & Complexity

This position directs regulatory compliance and safety activities for the Flight Operations division at Alaska Airlines (AS).

Key Duties

  • Directs the long-term strategy to maintain Alaska Airlines Operations Specifications, Parts A, B, & C.

  • Establishes strategic goals to drive the development of processes and systems to achieve and maintain safety and regulatory compliance.

  • Leads the validation of and authorizes admission to Flight Deck IAW 121.547(a)(4).

  • Represents Alaska Airlines at industry forums on regulatory compliance.

  • Directs the management of the Flight Operations audit program.

  • Oversees investigations to establish root causes, and validates and monitors corrective actions submitted to the FAA, as well as internal and external auditor teams.

  • Liaises between the Flight Operations division and the FAA.

  • Directs the administration and release of data and documentation for FAA queries and investigations.

  • Notifies the FAA in the event of an occurrence, emergency, incident, or accident.

  • Applies for exemptions and deviations to FAA regulations appropriate to Flight Operations.

  • Acts as key stakeholder and expert, representing Flight Operations, for information management systems related to the safety reporting system.

  • Manages the Flight Operations SMS to include safety assurance data analytics, safety investigations, root cause analysis, and safety risk management.

  • Advises the Vice President of Flight Operations on risk by correlation of data sources and drives the development and oversight of teams of subject matter experts to address emerging risk factors in the operation.

  • Drives improvement in the SMS by liaising with Safety counterparts to streamline reporting, data analytics, data sharing and presentation, and network improvements.

  • Develops people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on fostering strategic and systems thinking, development of talent, and succession planning across teams and disciplines.

  • Shapes culture of the team through action, presence, and reinforcement of behaviors to ensure a continuing understanding of Alaska Airlines’ commitment to safety and compliance.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in a Flight Operations discipline such as dispatch, pilot, or ground/flight instruction.

  • A Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree or an additional 2 years of training or experience in lieu of this degree.

  • A minimum of 5 years of leadership experience, with at least 2 of those years directly leading people.

  • Experience leading teams in in an SMS environment, specifically root cause taxonomy, data analytics, safety investigations, and functional audit.

  • Exceptional communication skills (e.g., verbal, written, and listening), with the ability to communicate complex processes to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to create collaborative relationships that drive outcomes in the best interest of the company, with others in the organization, and key external business partners.

  • Ability to engage with and establish credibility with business partners at the most senior/executive level.

  • Ability to manage through ambiguity, analyze and summarize complex data in a concise manner, and make meaningful business recommendations.

  • Expertise building strong working relationships across all levels of the organization.

  • Detail-oriented, with the ability to keep track of many moving parts and spot conflicts early.

  • Experience leading and mentoring teams.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum age of 18.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred

  • Specialized training in safety management, root cause analysis, safety investigations, or data analytics.

Salary Range

$157,700 - $252,300 / year

Total Target Compensation Range (incl. bonus & equity)

$206,810.00 - $329,790.00

Salary Details

The pay range and total target compensation package listed above is the expected pay offered for this position at the start of employment. Your pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, your relevant experience/level, experience level, and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.

Note: We don't typically hire at the top of the range.
