One Workplace Design Studio Manager - Architectural Services in Seattle, Washington
The Studio Manager helps manage and oversee the Architectural Studio team in providing design & construction administration services for select projects in the US and Canada & Seattle/Bellevue corporate locations for our client’s portfolio. Reporting to the Program Director, this position is responsible for the day-to-day management of Designers and Project Managers. Oversight of Studio:
As leader of the studio, engages with client and vendor partners as primary point and accountable for quality service and overall performance.
Review project engagements and assign work based on individual skill and work volume trends.
Leads Studio huddles for regular review of status and work highlights from designers. Roll out reminders and highlights that need immediate communication to the Studio.
Work with Design Program Manager align with program practices, documentation, quality standards.
Manage and monitor team members process on projects and ensure that projects are achieving milestones and risks are being completely assessed and mitigated or communicated.
Ensure designers are providing effective regular communication with all parties regarding project status, including internal team, clients, vendors and other partners to ensure project deadlines while maintaining exceptional customer service.
Understands legal liability in providing architectural services and engaged license Architect when appropriate. Works with project managers to assess scope and requests at a regular interval to ensure the studio is practicing appropriate work.
Identify bottlenecks and escalate in a timely manner to ensure projects are not delayed unnecessarily. Coach team members on effective analysis of roadblocks and communication strategy to yield accurate and timely responses. Escalate to Program Director for review and handoff as needed.
Act as a mentor and work with Program Director to provide regular feedback for everyone through both formal Huddles and informal channels on performance and competency development.
Quality Control & Consistency
Technical expertise in design & construction drawing standards, design process, architectural specification, and construction administration documents.
Familiarity with building code and ADA applicable in various commercial office/interior conditions, TI project types, and renovations
Manages regular quality control touchpoints: audit sampling, final checks, design development review.
Ensure team is practicing standard process and protocols by providing feedback and monitoring performance through audits and review of work in progress.
Identify opportunities for improvement of existing processes and propose to Program Manager to update or create tools.
Identify inconsistent or unclear practices requiring cross functional resolution and engage Program Manager to develop resolution.
Budget & Profitability
Assist in yearly budget development based on year-to-date resource use and workload volume trends.
Manage execution of approved budget, prioritizing on time hiring and early identification of attrition to ensure profitability.
Ensures timely entry to MXT for all team members, with mindfulness to month end closeout.
Timely review and analysis of billable hours/individual work assignments in support of on time monthly invoicing
- studio designers, studio project managers, design program manager, design program director, FF&E planners, Architect, client, client representatives, client vendors.
Skills and Abilities
B.A. Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architectural Studies, or relevant degree.
10 years’ experience in interior design, architecture, or equivalent
Knowledgeable of drawing document standards, building code/ADA, architectural practice
Expertise at leading project communication and scope development directly with the client, and working with partners, GC, subcontractors.
Experience developing client drawing deliverables and/or other technical project documents
Experience managing workflow, developing project schedules, strategizing resolution to complex issues
Ability to lead a team effectively; leads by providing guidance and direction to achieve quality and customer service within project deadlines.
Preferred Experience: direct supervision of individual performance, systems furniture design & specification
Proficiency with AutoCAD
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products: Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams
