Port of Seattle Deputy Chief of Police in Seattle, Washington

Some of what you'll be doing:

  • You will support the Chief in all personnel management issues, including appointments, promotions, demotions, suspensions, assignments, and transfers of staff.

  • You will supervise assigned police managers to resolve policing issues, ensure staff have the resources necessary to complete the job, and evaluate the job performance of staff in accomplishing goals.

  • You will actively participate in negotiations and grievance hearings with the six collective bargaining units representing department employees and coordinate labor relations activities with Port Labor Relations staff.

  • You will manage any assigned bureau and assist the Chief with management of the department and direct the development and implementation of policies and procedures, making modifications as needed.

  • You will make decisions and recommendations to the Chief that affect the direction, outcome, and mission of the department.

  • You will establish and maintain effective channels of communication with citizens, customers, allied agencies, and Port personnel, including speaking before the media, public hearings, or other events.

  • You will support the preparation of short and long-term plans for the Police Department, including budget, staffing/personnel, equipment, facilities, strategic and tactical planning.

  • You will review and analyze administrative and record keeping reports, special projects, research and analytical, or statistical reports to aid in strategic decision making.

  • You will review and analyze studies such as crime, trends, traffic pattern, and specialized programs.

Who you are:

  • Experienced – You have seven (7) years of law enforcement experience, of which two (2) or more years are serving in a Commander or Management Level equivalent in a police department, including supervision of other police supervisors and management of major programs. Additionally, you must possess a Washington State Peace Officer Certification or the ability to obtain one within the first six months of employment. (Candidates who have been separated from commissioned law enforcement activities for five (5) years or longer will not be considered for this position).

  • Desired – We hope you have a degree, and completed the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police, or Northwest School of Police and Command. We also hope you have five (5) or more years of Command-level experience.

  • Problem Solver – You can identify issues, develop solutions to problems, evaluate courses of action, and reach logical conclusions.

What else you need to know:

  • Driver’s License – You will need a valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one.

  • Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. You may be required to work weekends and holidays and respond to emergencies as needed.

  • Work Environment – You will primarily work in an office environment.

  • Grade Review – The pay range and grade for non-represented positions are under review and subject to change as part of the Port’s work to implement a new pay program. This review is intended to ensure that positions are aligned with the new program that will be implemented in early 2024.

  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle.

  • Background Investigation – You must pass a background investigation that includes a complete criminal records check, a polygraph examination, a medical examination and a psychological examination and other sources where information can be obtained to measure one's suitability for police work.
