The Maxillofacial Prosthetic Service is within the Department of Restorative at the School of Dentistry (UW-SOD). It is a is a unique prosthodontic specialty that focusses its efforts on rehabilitation services for individuals who suffer anatomical compromise due to congenital (birth) disorders, trauma, and oral/facial malignancies. The Maxillofacial Prosthetic Service serves a diverse population and is committed to supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Maxillofacial Prosthetic Service has an outstanding opportunity for a Dental Assistant 1 (NE S SEIU 925 Non Supv) to expand their scope of practice and develop skills in patient management unique to this practice. The Dental Assistant 1 (NE S SEIU 925 Non Supv) will report to the Director of Maxillofacial Prosthetic Service and assist the Maxillofacial Prosthodontist in treating patients with complex oral/facial rehabilitation and prosthodontic care. Under direct supervision, the Dental Assistant 1 will assist in dental examinations and treatment of patients, operate equipment, sterilize instruments, mix treatment materials, clean and reset rooms, order and restock supplies, and assist in front desk duties as needed which may include answering phones, retrieve and take messages.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Seat patients, adjust chair and prepare patient for dentist

  • Assist faculty in various fundamental four-handed techniques such as coordinated placement and removal of rubber dam, instrument exchanges, operate water, air and evacuating equipment.

  • Prepare and mix amalgam, composite, cement, and medicaments for restorations; mix pumice for prophylaxis; and prepare and mix impression materials.

  • Makes radiographs: FMX, BW, and PA as indicated by the dentist

  • Sterilize and prepare instruments for set ups, fill, drain, and clean sterilizer, prepare supplies.

  • Prepare anesthetic syringes.

  • Maintain dental records and files; maintain inventory and requisition supplies

  • Clean and maintain dental chair and equipment.

  • Clean sinks and check/fill soap dispenser daily.

  • Run steri-strip once a week in the autoclave

  • Disinfect and purge dental unit water systems as required

  • Shocks dental units as indicated

  • Clean amalgam trap as indicated

  • Order and restock supplies as needed.

  • Instruct patients in home care.

  • Keep all areas, clean, orderly, and neat

  • Administrative assistant duties as needed, which may include answering phones, retrieve, and take messages, operate the copier/scanner, and schedule appointments.

  • Provide excellent customer service

  • Perform related duties as required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Completion of a training program for dental assistants; current certification as a dental assistant (CDA) or the ability to obtain same within six months; or six months of dental assistant experience OR equivalent education/experience. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate, or ability to obtain within 1 month LEGAL REQUIRMENT Registration with the State of Washington as a Dental Assistant
