Description
Amazon Fresh Grocery is seeking a talented and entrepreneurial Data Engineer who is passionate about innovation and data democratization. Your mission is to dramatically scale the speed and quality of decision-making in our Retail operations through a mesh of interoperable domain-oriented data products, self-serve data platform, intelligent automation, and scientific applications.
As the lead Data Engineer for the Central Retail BI team, you will be a strategic partner for fellow engineers, analysts, scientists, and business leads to solve the most complex data problems in the Grocery business. You will work with a wide range of tools and systems and stay abreast of emergent technologies and frameworks, knowing where and when to implement them. You will have strong data mining and modeling skills and be comfortable facilitating Think Big ideation, working from concept through to execution. You will partner with Central Data Engineering team on solutions, federated governance, and overall data architecture and strategy. You will participate in the full development life cycle including design, implementation and testing, documentation, delivery, support, and maintenance.
Key job responsibilities
Design, implement and support a self-serve data platform for engineers, scientists, and business stakehodlers (for both technical and non-technical user groups)
Build and maintain interoperable AWS components for data storage, computation, and compliance/privacy (e.g., EC2, EMR, S3, Glue, Redshift, etc.)
Develop the end-to-end automation of data pipelines, making datasets readily-consumable by visualization tools and notification systems
Create automated alarming and dashboards to monitor data integrity
Interface with other technology teams to extract, transform, and load data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL, scripting (e.g., Python), and AWS technologies
Influence the organization to adopt next-generation data technology and frameworks, knowing where and when to implement
Partner with fellow engineers and scientists to build proof of concept applications (iterating and improving upon them over time) such as for business process automation, forecasting, and causal inference
Produce and maintain comprehensive documentation and metadata for your solutions
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline
3+ years of industry experience in Data Engineering, Software Development, Business Intelligence, Data Science, or related field with a track record of manipulating, processing, and extracting value from large datasets.
Highly proficient in writing complex, highly-optimized SQL to build ETL pipelines
Highly proficient in at least one scripting language (e.g., Python, R, Bash)
Strong knowledge of data modeling, data warehousing, and distributed storage and computing.
Proven success in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior management to collect requirements, describe data modeling decisions and data engineering strategy
Familiarity with business intelligence reporting tools such as Tableau, QuickSight, or Cognos
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline
Experience working with AWS big data technologies (e.g., EMR, Redshift, S3, Glue, Kinesis and Lambda)
Knowledge of software engineering best practices across the development lifecycle, including agile methodologies, coding standards, code reviews, source management, build processes, testing, and operations
Experience providing technical coaching and mentoring to other engineers for best practices on data engineering
Familiarity with statistical models and auto-detection algorithms for solving data quality
Prior experience in Retail, Consumables, and/or Supply Chain Management industry

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $118,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $205,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
