As Starbucks corporate counsel – Global Data Privacy & Security, you will work as a member of the Global Data Privacy & Security legal team in the Law & Corporate Affairs Department to provide legal advice and services to key internal stakeholders, including Global Data Privacy and Global Cybersecurity Services, wherever Starbucks does business globally. And in doing so, you will play a key role in fostering Starbuck’s mission by supporting the responsible use of customer and partner data.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Essential job responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  • Providing day-to-day legal support and advice to global data privacy, cybersecurity, technology, marketing, and human resources organizations on privacy and cybersecurity issues.

  • Tracking and guiding compliance with evolving privacy and cybersecurity laws, regulations, data transfer frameworks, litigation, and enforcement trends; and advising on their practical impact on the business.

  • Reviewing, negotiating, and drafting commercial privacy and cybersecurity contract terms.

  • Advising on and drafting privacy notices, policies, and standards, in collaboration with Global Data Privacy.

  • Provide legal support and guidance in response to cybersecurity and privacy incidents.

  • Participate in data governance and cross-functional groups that oversee privacy and security controls/safeguards; support risk assessments; and drive the resolution of risks/issues, including by escalating key issues to leadership, cross-functional partners, and governance bodies.

  • Provide guidance on legal requirements for new business models and technologies, such as generative AI.

  • Efficiently utilizing and managing outside counsel for support.

Leveraging your previous experience, we will enable you to:

  • Guide – Clearly and concisely communicate strategic legal counseling to compliance and business teams.

  • Collaborate – Establish highly collaborative relationships with business and compliance teams and with other legal department partners to provide cross-functional support for the organization.

  • Be a Trusted Advisor – Help advance business objectives and mitigate risk by acting as a trusted advisor whose strategic thinking, business acumen, pragmatic problem-solving, and proactive counsel are sought out by stakeholders.

We would love to hear from people with:

  • Five to nine years of relevant substantive legal experience in a law firm or company legal department.

  • Deep knowledge of global privacy and cybersecurity laws, regulations, data transfer frameworks, and industry guidelines, especially those relevant for technology, retail, and food service companies.

  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and projects, including geographically diverse teams in various time zones, including the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

  • A global mindset and experience harmonizing differing legal requirements across multiple jurisdictions into a global, principles-based approach.

  • Experience providing practical, risk-based legal advice to businesses with international and/or complex corporate entities, franchisees, or licensees.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with professional colleagues at all levels within the organization.

  • High self-motivation who can work independently with minimal supervision but also thrive on collaborating with teammates and other cross-functional business partners to provide practical, risk-based legal advice that helps advance business objectives.

  • A flexible mindset who is comfortable with ambiguity and motivated by a dynamic business and regulatory environment.

  • Experience counseling records management teams globally and in various jurisdictions.

  • Experience managing outside counsel efficiently.

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.

  • License to practice law in pertinent jurisdictions.

  • Privacy or compliance accreditation. CIPP/CIPM or comparable privacy certification is desirable.

*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND, or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
