Port of Seattle College Intern – Aviation Environmental Waste Reduction and Outreach Support in Seattle, Washington

Some of what you'll be doing:

This is a full-time summer internship with the potential be extended part-time into the school year. This internship position will directly support SEA airport’s Environment & Sustainability Department, predominantly the Waste Reduction and Education & Outreach programs. Waste reduction and recycling program tasks will include gathering and analyzing waste and recycling data, conducting assessments of equipment and facilities, and conducting education/outreach and training with airport tenants and additional research support as needed. This internship will also help support and implement SEA’s environmental education program focused on building passenger and community awareness and engagement opportunities with environmental initiatives. The intern will be introduced to programmatic planning and project implementation strategies, environmental communication and marketing techniques, and stakeholder engagement processes

This intern will work directly with a Port Environmental Program Manager who will guide task assignment, provide coaching, and assist in project coordination. The intern will collaborate with other Aviation and Port staff, consultants, and tenants and interns, gaining exposure to multiple department functions and bodies of work through additional assignments as workload and schedules allow.

Some of your essential duties include:

  • Learn about SEA’s waste reduction programs and environmental education/outreach campaigns.

  • Gather and analyze data, assess equipment, and document conditions related to SEA’s waste reduction programs through communications with Port staff and in-person inspections.

  • Conduct research into waste prevention topics, under direction of Port staff.

  • Conduct waste reduction and recycling program education, outreach, and training for airport tenants

  • Assist w/ updating and implementing environmental education/outreach campaigns.

  • Support various projects and tasks within the waste reduction program and other environmental programs as workload and schedules allow.

  • Participate in meetings and discussions with Port Environmental and other staff.

Who you are:

  • A student – You must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or a recent graduate (< 1 year ago) in a degree program such as sustainability, natural resources, physical or environmental sciences or communications.

What else you need to know:

  • Work Schedule – This is a full-time (40 hours per week) internship position in the summer with the ability to extend to part-time hours during the school year.  Normal work hours will be scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role.

  • Work Environment – You will work in an office environment as well as work in all types of inclement weather. Hybrid remote working schedules may be available with manager approval.

  • Limited Duration – This is a limited duration position and is expected to last no longer than one year.

  • Safety Requirements – Should you, on rare occasions need to come on site at the airport, you will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.

  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.

  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
