Positions in this function is under general supervision, responsible for quality and process improvement initiatives, including program development related to patient quality/process improvement initiatives and associated education for the organization.

Program content focus may include clinical quality, patient safety, patient experience, population health activities, regulatory compliance and approaches to improving work processes and standard work. This position coordinates and facilitates teams whose aim is improving the patient experience of care (including clinical and service quality), improving the health of populations and improving value and overall health of patients. Evaluate, analyze and manage data related to quality. Plans and organizes education programs for clinicians and teammates.

This position needs to be able to deliver training content and exercises to teams on the application of lean concepts such as built-in-quality, waste, flow, pull, level-loading, process mapping, standard work and auditing. QI Consultants also need to be able to facilitate cross-functional team rapid process improvement projects and Lean Management Training courses. Effective process improvement facilitation includes accurate chartering (scoping) of the work and team, conducting assessment and planning work with appropriate identification of data to collect, processes to map, and projects to pursue with operational leaders and teams. They also need to be able to lead management review meetings and coach on effective auditing methods and tools.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Initiative and Program Development, Management and Large-Scale Improvement Project Facilitation:

  • Serves as the subject matter expert and consultant to operations for quality programs and lean improvement methodologies

  • Aligns strategy and planning with organizational initiatives

  • Facilitates cross-functional improvement teams, including development of work plans, timelines, and standard work

  • Evaluates work flow to identify process improvement opportunities by applying Lean principles, methods and tools to enhance team performance on quality of clinical care, efficiency, service and safety. Recommends policy and procedure changes to improve patient care and clinical outcomes

  • Reviews and develops clinical policies/ procedures/ guidelines/ standard work in collaboration with operations

  • Coordination / Facilitation of Program Based Education or Training:

  • Plans and conducts ad-hoc education programs for physicians and clinical staff necessary to meet project goals and to facilitate and support the Clinic’s clinical initiatives

  • Facilitation of Lean Management Training, A3 and DMS courses

  • Data Analysis, Reporting and Evaluation:

  • Develops measures based on national standards and best practices and monitors, trends, and utilizes data to drive quality improvement

  • Collaborates with the quality department data analysts and the Information Technology Department to provide relevant reports

  • Clinical Operations Analysis:

  • Contributes to modifications in provide and staff practice patterns to continuously optimize patient outcomes, quality of care, work flow, use of resources and patient service

  • Proactively communicates effectively regarding program results and patient stories

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of related healthcare experience preferably in a leadership role

  • 1+ years of experience with training and coaching of teams

  • Experience leading change management

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, email and internet

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPHQ Certification (Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality, or/ and CSP Certification (Certified Safety Professional) preferred

  • 1+ years of experience in application of lean principles, methods and tools with leadership and teams

  • 1+ years background in healthcare industry and managed care

  • 1+ years of experience with Stars/HEDIS and/or CAHPS/HOS

  • Experience with Power BI, Smart Sheets, Sales Force and/or other SAS tools

  • Experience with populations health tools and/or data management systems (EMR)

  • Quality Improvement Consultants will be supported in learning lean process focusing on key competencies of Rapid Process Improvement, A3, DMS, PDSA cycles

  • Direct involvement in efforts to improve systems and processes

Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $70,200 to $137,800 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
