The department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time, day shift, MICROBIOLOGY CLINICAL LABORATORY ASSISTANT. As a member of the Fang Laboratory, the Clinical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for assisting laboratory members with non-technical laboratory tasks such as media preparation, autoclaving of biohazardous wastes, cleaning of laboratory glassware, general laboratory maintenance, and assisting with experiments as needed. The person in this role is responsible for inventory control and semiannual organization of laboratory chemicals using MyChem, as well as stocking laboratory materials and maintaining a clean work environment. Works under the direct supervision of the faculty and senior fellows to assist in the performance of technical laboratory procedures such as PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, isolation of plasmid and genomic DNA, and more complex experiments as required. RESPONSIBILITES Facilitate the smooth operation of the Fang Laboratory research operation in a BSL2 laboratory. Prepare media including liquid and agar plates with and without antibiotics. Prepare sterile glass and plastic supplies in the laboratory for general use. Autoclave biohazardous laboratory waste for disposal. Maintain a list of chemicals used in the laboratory using MyChem. Maintain compliance, safety and training relevant to job functions as assigned. Defrost freezers, as needed. Perform related duties as required. REQUIREMENTS: High school graduation OR equivalent education/experience. Desired: Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry or related fiel. Experience in a microbiology laboratory operating at BSL2 containment. Advanced science courses in Biology and hands-on laboratory work. Experience with MyChem software used at the University of Washington for chemical inventory management. Experience with Macintosh and PC personal computers. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
