Childbirth Educator - Lytle Center @ Swedish First Hill

Per Diem

Evening Shift

This position functions to meet the educational needs of expectant and new families and their support networks. In meeting these needs, this position assists families in the process of transitioning from the role of expectant parents to the role of parents responsible for care of their newborns. This position provides education by utilizing a process including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Assesses the individual educational needs of each expectant family.

  • Recognizes the age and developmental level of each expectant family member as relevant factors and applies appropriate decision-making skills in assessing, planning, and providing education for the family.

  • Utilizes information obtained from the client, her significant other, and/or healthcare team member to identify any potential problems, risk factors, or other needs of the expectant family.

  • Using the instructor manual and/or formal class outline as a basis for class structure, develops and adapts class content to meet the individual needs of class participants, ensuring that objectives/expected outcomes can be met.

  • Plans teaching strategies, mixer techniques, and use of audio-visual materials based on principles of adult learning and the ages and developmental levels of class participants, adhering to the class outline and timeframe guidelines.

  • Speaks clearly and effectively within a presentation that is accurate, impartial, unbiased, respectful, and relaxed.

  • Provides current information regarding the perinatal period in an organized, logical manner.

  • Provides an atmosphere conducive to learning.

  • Is approachable, accepting, and supportive of different viewpoints and ideas.

  • Encourages the expectant mother and/or her significant other(s) to actively participate in order to meet their learning needs.

  • Initiates referrals and plans strategies for addressing identified problems with other members of the healthcare team.

  • Provides documentation when necessary.

  • Evaluates client’s and family’s response to their education.

  • Initiates independent and/or collaborative changes in teaching style as indicated. Facilitates changes in educational content in collaboration with peers as needed. Delivers education based on the principles of adult learning.

  • Is an advocate for expectant and new families. Utilizes resources, when applicable to meet the needs of expectant and new families.

  • Communicates effectively with the expectant or new mother, her significant other(s), and her support network.

  • Demonstrates teaching skills by delivering the information with accuracy and efficiency and confirming understanding by class participants.

  • Documents complete and accurate information when necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree: In related field or

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience in childbirth education.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of formal childbirth education training program.

  • Upon hire: Certification by a nationally recognized childbirth education organization

  • Six months: Teaching experience.
