Foss Maritime Chief Mate--PNW Oceans in Seattle, Washington

JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY: Responsible for assisting the Captain in towing, docking and undocking of barges and other vessels, from port to port. Supervises the crew when the Captain is off watch with the operation of the vessel. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Assists the Captain and maintains the crew in matters of safety, seamanship, maintenance, navigation, and all other job related skills. * If the captain of the vessel should become incapacitated, it is the duty of the Mate to assume responsibility of the vessel until such a time the captain should become replaced. * Responsible for the safety of the vessel and crew while underway, as well as being responsible for the safe movement and navigation of the vessel and their tows. * Steers, operates, pushes, and pulls barges as directed by the Captain to help reach destinations and/or berths. * Operates winches, engines, generators, and electrical systems along with wheel house navigational electronics and devices. * Maintains a healthy work environment with the crew, and the personal health of his/her self and crews, to safely and effectively perform their jobs. * Maintains a constant accurate vessel official log. * Adheres to all company policies and ensures the crew adheres to and acts out Foss company policies. * Physical duties may consist of working with heavy chain bridles, pennants, and the securing of cargo and gear. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: * Ability to deal with intermittently high stress, due to job related situation and supervisory requirements. * Must have high precision, to perform movements required to complete jobs safely without injury or damage. * Possess quality people skills, must supervise and live with 4-6 other crew members and also requires dealing with customers and work with industry related people. * High dexterity required to safety operate tug and tow. * Knowledge of mechanical machinery, rigging, and movements. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma is required; preference will be given to candidates with a 4 year college degree. Also must have a marine operations background; being familiar with shipyards, tugs, and barges. Necessary experience is dependent upon the individual, but a minimum of 5 years sea-going experience on towing vessels. Must have at minimum US Coast Guard License 1600 GT Mate upon Oceans with Mate of Towing Vessels endorsement. Also required are: Current radar observer endorsement, FCC marine radiotelephone operator permit, and STCW 2010.
