Virginia Mason Franciscan Health Central Processing Technician in Seattle, Washington

[POSITION PURPOSE]{.underline} This position is skilled at obtaining blood specimens and performs pre-analytical processing of patient samples based on established laboratory procedures. In addition, this position communicates pertinent laboratory information to healthcare providers including test ordering instructions, patient test results, or established laboratory practices.

[PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES]{.underline} The following duties are intended to be representative of the work performed by incumbents in this position and is not all-inclusive. The omission of a specific duty or responsibility will not preclude it from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical extension of position responsibilities.

  1. Performs venipuncture and instructs patients in proper collection of urine, stool, and sputum specimens.
  2. Performs specimen accessioning, ordering, and data entry. Verifies orders for completeness and accuracy. Ensures proper labeling of specimens.
  3. Prepares specimen for testing by following protocol. Must manage samples appropriately according to priority and stability.
  4. Follows patient service standards answering phone calls from inside and outside the medical center. Troubleshoots problems and questions utilizing resources. Verbally gives, faxes, and mails results following HIPAA guidelines and VMMC policies. Files laboratory reports and requisitions appropriately.
  5. Prepares send out specimens to be performed at outside reference laboratories.
  6. Process add on test requests insuring proper sample type, stability, ordering of the test in the LIS, and labeling. Process urine samples according to procedure and specimen requirements. Prepares solution and reagents following procedure and requirements.
  7. Cleans and disinfects laboratory equipment. Insures inventory supply levels using Kanban system.
  8. Acts as a float within the laboratory, assisting workers as workload dictates. Advise, mentor, and help train new staff. May coordinate projects as needed.
  9. In addition to the above Central Processing Technicians at Seattle Main Campus will be responsible for the following: · Preparing and shipping specimens according to the Dangerous Goods Regulations for Declaration of Shipping and Packaging Diagnostic and Infectious substances as well as meeting state and federal shipping requirements. Complete education requirements to maintain certification for Shipping Infectious Substances. Accountable for samples that are sent to outside reference labs. · Transcribe result reports from reference laboratories for non-interfaced tests into our Laboratory Information System (LIS). Fax and notify critical results to the ordering provider.
