(https://www.tacoma.uw.edu/strategic-planning) The UW Tacoma Campus Safety and Security department has an outstanding opportunity for a Full-Time Campus Security Officer. This individual will provide general public safety services to faculty, staff, students and visitors on campus. In addition, the officer is required to: Patrol campus; protect personnel and campus property; promote and preserve safety and order; encourage voluntary compliance with state laws and University regulations and enforce as necessary; respond to crimes and accidents occurring on campus; render first aid. Receive and conduct preliminary inquiries into complaints of criminal activity; prepare and distribute incident reports; gather evidence; locate witnesses; protect crime scenes until relieved by proper authorities, and appear in court as required. Operate communications equipment; answer telephone inquiries; monitor computer security system; monitor and report facility problems to appropriate services; perform safety escorts; secure buildings; assist Tacoma Police and Fire Departments in cases of emergency. Perform related duties as required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: High School graduation or equivalent; possession of a valid driver's license; no previous felony convictions; AND two years of full-time college in police science or allied field; OR two years of police or campus security experience. This position is designated as one that performs an essential function. This means that the position's incumbent must continue to report to work as directed in the event that the University suspends operations because of severe weather, natural disaster, or other emergency condition. Additional skill requirements include: Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work well with, and be sensitive to, people from diverse backgrounds and people of all ages. The ability to remain courteous and considerate while working in demanding and stressful situations; a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively; and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Physical Requirements:

  • The ability to walk for extended periods of time.

  • The ability to walk up and down steps both inside and outside of buildings.

  • The ability to walk outdoors in your assigned area in all types of weather conditions.

  • The ability to stand and/or sit for extended periods of time both inside and outside of buildings.

  • The ability to lift objects weighing up to 35 lbs.
