We have an outstanding opportunity for a Campus & Community Outreach Specialist .

The Campus & Community Outreach Specialist plays a pivotal role in developing and executing outreach strategies targeting the campus community, neighboring communities, and external partner agencies. These strategies will increase the prominence of sustainable transportation options and associated benefits to the larger community and promote Transportation Services products and services. As the lead for the department’s outreach efforts, this position will cultivate relationships with campus stakeholders, partner agencies, which includes but is not limited to, Sound Transit, King County Metro, WSDOT, and City of Seattle departments, and neighboring community organizations to promote sustainable transportation initiatives and encourage adoption of transportation alternatives to single-occupant vehicle travel. The position will allow Transportation Services to provide consistent and authoritative representation in a range of events and forums led by partner agencies and jurisdictions across the region.

Reporting to the Commute Options and Transportation Planning Manager, the Outreach Specialist plays a creative and leadership role in promoting and educating the campus-wide community and visitors, as well as internal and external stakeholders, on Transportation Services and other UW programs, products, services and news. The person in this position will work closely with the UW Facilities Communications team. The successful candidate will work with external agencies and organizations regarding transportation to/from and on the University campus.

With a focus on customer engagement and community outreach, the person in this position will expend significant effort interacting directly with campus stakeholders and community members. The ideal candidate will demonstrate innovation, collaboration, and a passion for promoting sustainable transportation options. Experience working with diverse urban populations and knowledge of transportation systems is a plus.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Outreach Communication Strategy and Execution (50%)

• Represent Transportation Services to various internal and external audiences at public, in-person events. • Create, revise, and disseminate electronic and print materials. • Collaborate with Transportation Services teams and UW Facilities Communications to develop and execute outreach, communications and marketing plans. • Assist in planning and execution of assigned projects, providing ongoing status updates and proactively solving challenges as they arise. • Develop and participate in the measurement and evaluation of the impact of marketing, communication and outreach efforts on Transportation Services programs/products, using customer feedback and data. • Liaison with campus partners to ensure UW Transportation Services is present at all relevant campus events. • Assist in planning and development of events on behalf of UW Transportation Services. • Lead communications and global timeline elements of annual renewal of UW parking products. • Advocate for the use of new technology and communication tools proven to be research-based best practices.

Program/Project Management (20%)

• Develop and maintain the Transportation Services website, including basic information architecture, photo and graphic choices, and regular updates for the unit. • Develop and support communications associated with special projects to promote department initiatives with University leadership, internal/external stakeholders and the community. • Effectively manage communications associated with multiple medium to large projects at any given time, including workgroup initiatives, pilot programming, and cross-functional initiatives that actively support the department’s values, mission, and vision. • Establish timelines, manage resources, articulate roles and responsibilities, monitor and measure progress, take remedial action or celebrate project/team successes as appropriate. • Monitor and report on program and project performance and results. • Lead and oversee project work of departmental teams and staff related to communications, outreach or marketing. • Work in close collaboration with UW Facilities Communications, including weekly meetings, materials development, and communications timelines. • Responsible for on-campus outreach events such as Dawg Daze, Bike Valet, and New Employee Welcome Day.

Content Development (20%)

• Collaborate on implementation and maintenance of social media accounts. • Write and edit content for web pages and social media. • Design graphics for use in signs, print and digital media displayed campuswide. • Research, write and edit content to explain and promote the work of UW Transportation Services. • Produce marketing and promotional material for campus-wide initiatives. • Write and edit executive/leadership-level communications for Transportation Services. • Help manage written and recorded operational communications to customers, including notification of service interruptions/impacts and policy changes. • Ensure messaging is in alignment with Transportation Services and University standards, vision and values. • Respond to data and communication requests from external stakeholders, peer universities, news outlets and researchers. • Develop and communicate bicycle program and service news to customers.

Teamwork and University Engagement (10%)

• Positively promote the organization by demonstrating a high level of professionalism and support for organizational values and expectations. • Interact with clients, faculty, staff, governmental agencies, vendors, and the public regarding policies and procedures for Transportation Services programs and assigned projects. • Respond to public inquiries and provide customer information in a timely, professional, and courteous manner. • Utilize Salesforce software for managing customer interactions and tracking outreach efforts. • May serve on various committees within the University and related organizations. • Work with Communications Specialist on communications projects and programs to ensure business redundancy • Stay informed of industry trends and best practices and share transportation current events with executive leadership. • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements include:

• Bachelor’s degree. • Three years of experience developing and implementing outreach events or programs, overseeing marketing and public awareness campaigns, coordinating communications and outreach activities, including event planning, set-up, and tear-down, to include proven ability to communicate successfully with stakeholders at all levels throughout a complex, diverse organization. • Proficient with oral and written communication including developing electronic and written materials, report writing, editing, layout and design. • Demonstrated customer service skills. • Excellent organizational skills; ability to work independently and successfully coordinate multiple tasks within project priorities; demonstrated flexibility to meet changing/unpredictable needs. • Excellent problem-solving skills; ability to analyze complex information, and to define and solve problems; ability to function effectively within a complex regulatory environment; ability to develop and interpret policies and procedures. • Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office suite, social media platforms, and CRM systems such as Salesforce • Demonstrated cultural competency through customer service and team interaction.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

• Transportation industry knowledge and experience • Possession of a valid Washington State driver’s license • Event management experience • Master’s Degree • Experience working in the public or higher education sectors; experience in the transportation industry. • Experience with community outreach and program delivery.

Conditions of Employment:

• May be required to lift / move up to 40 lbs. • Work may be required during hours beyond standard business hours or regularly scheduled shift, including weekends; professional travel may be required. • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office environment; however, work may include incidental outdoor or fieldwork with exposure to the elements and variable weather conditions. • This position will be eligible to work remotely and onsite on a hybrid basis with supervisor approval. • Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment. • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
