Clear and Respectful Communication POSITION COMPLEXITIES The Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC) has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Associate Director for Administration and Operations. The Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC) is one of seven National Research Centers continuously funded by the National Institutes of health since the 1960s. WaNPRC supports the research enterprise at the University of Washington and partners with others in the Seattle area, across the United States and globally to support their research aimed at improving human health and promoting the highest standards of care, health, well-being and conservation for primates around the world. WaNPRC is a large research organization with 5 units of scientific excellence; neuroscience, infectious disease and translational medicine, gene therapy and regenerative medicine, global conservation, education and outreach and animal and scientific resources. We are seeking a motivated, mission-driven, and talented administrator to strategize and guide the leadership of WaNPRC, ensuing the administrative, operational, and financial stability and vitality of the center and its support of leading edge biomedical and behavioral research. POSITION DIMENSIONS AND IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSITY The successful candidate will partner with WaNPRC leadership to oversee financial and business operations, research administration, and facilities for both Seattle and Arizona sites in partnership with the Associate Director for Animal Resources, the Associate Director for Research, the Assistant Site Director in Arizona and the Director, and lead strategy and initiatives in partnership with WaNPRC leadership, in support of organizational goals. Reporting to the WaNPRC Director, the successful candidate will partner with WaNPRC leadership to oversee financial and business operations, research administration, and facilities for both Seattle and Arizona sites and ensure exceptional performance of reports to the Director on the performance of the financial, administrative and facilities units within WaNPRC. The successful candidate will participate with and provide guidance to the Director in support of the development of administrative strategic initiatives toward the WaNPRC’s administrative, fiscal, and operational goals. The successful candidate will strive for excellence and be able to handle a high paced sometimes stressful work environment and should be familiar with the working of the University of Washington and the National Institutes of Health sponsored projects and contracts process. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The Associate Director for Administration and Operations must have experience managing a dynamic and complex work environment with national and international partners, overseeing multifaceted programs and a track-record of achieving organizational goals. The successful candidate for the position will provide hands on support, guidance and leadership for the administrative and operational staff to ensure overall success of WaNPRC’s mission and vision and financial and research sustainability and vitality. This position will be responsible for the overall administrative, operational, and financial strategy of WaNPRC and will lead initiatives, along with guiding leadership, in support of our mission and vision.The Associate Director for Administration and Operations is responsible for:70% Administrative Operations
Together with WaNPRC leadership, devise financial strategies, policies, and innovative approaches for financial management and vitality to meet WaNPRC goals.
Provide strategy for research administration, pre and post award grant management, finance, and purchasing, and facilities.
Coordinate inter-group activities and delegate responsibilities as appropriate.
Manage budgets, hiring and contracting, and business negotiations.15% HR Operations
Manage, support and supervise the day-to-day operations of various groups, including research administration, pre and post award grants management, finance, purchasing and payroll, accounts receivable, and facilities.15% Compliance Operations
Ensure all local, state and federal regulations are followed.
Analyze audit reports and formulating improvements to Center workings.
Compile performance reports for WaNPRC leadership.Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise 1 Program Operations Specialist and 2 Assistant Directors. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Master’s degree in Business, Finance or related field, PLUS 6-8yrs of progressive responsibility overseeing financial, operational and programmatic functions. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Demonstrated leadership and team-building skills in diverse working environments.
Demonstrated acumen managing diverse teams in various sites, in-person and remotely, national and international.
Excellent financial analysis and information management as it relates to grant and contracts and project cost accounting and reporting, as well as developing innovative approaches.
Excellent oral and written/electronic communication skills to include professionalism, tact and discretion at all times as a representative of WaNPRC.
Proven decision-making skills in high-pressure environments.
Proven ability to interact well with persons of diverse backgrounds and at all levels of an organization, including external entities.
Proven effectiveness in a fast-paced, high-stress environment managing multiple projects and deadlines with shifting priorities.
Ability to handle sensitive situations and highly confidential information with discretion.
Strong technology skills as it relates to financial reporting and presentations.
Working knowledge of government regulations.
Working knowledge of NIH granting system.
Experience with UW operations a plus. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree and 10+ yrs of applicable experience in a university setting.
Experience leading change management in complex work environments.
Working knowledge of government regulations in a university setting. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Organization priorities may require accessibility outside normal business hours to achieve operational goals.
Position is essential and will be required to report to work and/or continue work obligations during times of suspended operations or as deemed necessary by WaNPRC.
