Department of Emergency Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for Assistant Director of Program Operations.

The Department of Emergency Medicine within the University of Washington’s School of Medicine (SoM) has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director within the Michael K. Copass, MD Paramedic Training Program. The Paramedic Training Program (PMT) involves a dynamic environment. PMT is hosted at Harborview Medical Center (HMC) and by the Seattle Fire Department (SFD). The objective of PMT is to educate and train paramedic students to attain advanced knowledge, experience, and skills to evaluate and effectively treat medical emergencies in the pre-hospital setting as mobile intensive care paramedics. Secondarily, it is the role of PMT to supervise and manage all currently certified King County paramedics as the single EMS Provider Supervisory Organization.

The Assistant Director will be a senior member of the PMT Leadership Team and will report directly to the Director of the Program. This position uses specialized knowledge of paramedic training and SFD operations to partner with the Director to plan, direct, communicate and implement operational and training initiatives throughout the PMT sub-units that are aligned with community and program’s strategic goals and mission. This position provides expert guidance to paramedic students and staff and directs, under the guidance of the Director, administrative, operational, credentialing, and educational operations. This position utilizes process improvement and project management tools to implement policies and develop strategic plans to ensure Paramedic Training goals are met. This position maintains essential professional relationships and leads communication and interactions across all units within the Department and other internal and external partners such as the Medical Centers, School of Medicine, and University of Washington, Seattle Fire Department, and the Medic One Foundation.

As a leadership position, the Assistant Director is expected to exercise independent judgment, solve complex problems, and develop innovative approaches in training paramedic students. The Assistant Director position requires an ability to direct and manage multiple priorities, effectively analyze a range of educational situations, and make sound decisions using effective time management skills, good business acumen, and balanced administrative judgement. The appointee must have excellent personnel management skills and must have strong organizational abilities. The Assistant Director must be able to work independently and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders to achieve the goals of the Program and School of Medicine.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Strategic Leadership (45%):

• Independently lead the creation of strategic, operational, and business plans for PMT sub-units to ensure the success of the identified initiatives,?objectives, and projects to meet Program needs. • Navigate complex, multidisciplinary healthcare systems to identify key contacts and stakeholders to provide input and make decisions relevant to Program projects, processes, and goals. • Lead Program space-related planning and associated projects to ensure training requirements are met. This includes facilitating coordination efforts between the PMT, the School of Medicine, and the Medical Centers. • Continuously improve Program operations by identifying process issues, planning and executing solutions, and evaluating outcomes.

Operations and Planning Management (45%): In collaboration with and in support of the vision of the Director of Program Operations and Medical Director, oversee administration, organization, and supervision of the educational program. This includes but is not limited to the following:

• Quality review and improvement of the educational program to include systems that demonstrate program effectiveness. • Orientation of and collaboration with clinical and field internship organizations and preceptors. • Constructive analysis and resolution of concerns and issues that may arise with Program stakeholders. • Coordination of paramedic student progress and promotions in collaboration with leadership from the sponsoring paramedic agency, Department of Medicine, SFD, and the Washington State Department of Health. • Development and management of the Program budget and finances. • Maintenance of Program policies and procedures that are consistent with UW policy and practice. • Lead team of administrative staff members. Provide supervision and mentorship of staff through operational guidance, performance feedback, corrective action, training, and professional development opportunities. • Other duties as assigned.

Teaching and Direct Student Support (10%): • Regularly teach needed courses to PMT students. • Regularly teach courses such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support to King County Paramedics

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree with major course work in a health care area, public administration, or a closely related field and a minimum of ten years’ applicable work experience with a minimum of five years’ experience as a field paramedic.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Emergency Medicine Service training credentials. • Paramedic certification (Washington state and/or National Registry) current within the last five years. • Knowledgeable about methods of instruction, testing and evaluation of students. • Field experience in the delivery of out-of-hospital emergency care. • Academic training and preparation related to emergency medical services at least equivalent to that of a paramedic. • Additional applicable experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis. • Knowledgeable about the current versions of the National EMS Scope of Practice and National EMS Education Standards, and about evidenced-informed clinical practice.

DESIRED:

• Fire service-based EMS experience. • Current NREMT certification or certification as Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic by the State of Washington or have academic training and preparation related to emergency medical services at least equivalent to that of a paramedic, such as a Registered Nurse. • Experience with CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) and JRC (Joint Review Committee on Education) accreditation compliance. • Curriculum development experience, reflecting a diverse student base. Test writing and evaluation skills. • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support instructor certification. Experience in teaching the current National Paramedic curriculum. • Student counseling skills. • Public speaking skills.
